as the topic says, how do you know if the viscous hub is busted?
Yes Kris is right it will free spin and cause the engine to overheat probly coz all the oil has leaked out over time or it will sieze solid and spin with engine speed (happened to my mates Lux).
Mine actually decided to free spin halfway up a hill climb at Toolangi on a 35 degree day. Almost cooked the bugger used heaps of Selleys instant putty to bond the fan bearing to the shaft, it was enough to get me home.

for one, the person that told me to fix it wouldn't benifit financially.
and the story.. I had an overheating problem with my bundy. There was no shroud so in traffic, the thing would overheat
so I picked up a shroud today, fit it, and the farkin thing is still overheating..
cruising its ok, but in traffic it overheats
its got me buggered, and I want it fixed..

this POS is starting to piss me off bad.
I could stop the viscus hub at 3,000rpm when the car was hot (with a cloth, and a small touch of force of course)
I then turned the car off, and the thing would free spin a lot when hot. more than it does when cold..
I'm starting to have doubts about this cooling system now.
Before I had the shroud on, it was getting nice temperatures cruising. Now with the shoud on, cruising the temp is higher than it was without one, and it still overheats on idle.
it has got me stuffed for ideas.. any ideas?

Robbie, when mine died I got a 2nd hand one from a wrecker $165 with the fan, so far so good (12 monhs +).
I did price new viscous clutches from like Repco, Autobahn etc (don't even bother going to the dealer) and a mate in the trade could get me one for around $140 which is superior to a stock one in that it locked up better.
Try Bundytime he maybe able to get you a trade price. Prices from Autbahn etc were around the $250 from memory.

Ok, heres my advice and the cheapest fix IMHO.
Firstly check wether or not the fan hup can be split, if so there will be a set of bolts (4) bolting the fan to the hub and another set of 4 bolting the two halves of the viscous coupling together. If it is like this the job is easy!
Go to Mister Toyota's spare parts shop and ask for part No 08816-10001.
This is Toyota silicone oil in a 15 ml tube. Get one tube to improve the fan, or get two if you want it basically locked all the time. Go home ,pull of the fan, mark it so u can reassemble properly,split the halves, squeeze the oil into one half, reassemble,(being careful with o-ring seal) and refit fan assembly to vehicle.
Tube of this goo will cost u roughly $10-$20.
