Cherokee questions

Post by N*A*M »

ok as i am continuing my search for a decent tow rig, i expanded the field to look at jeep cherokees. i test drove one years ago and found it quite a quick car. my research tells me its towing rating is quite high (higher than a gq anyway).

this will be purely for towing and for mild touring use so i don't need to know about mods. i just need to hear first hand accounts on what it is like to own one and how well does it tow. i hear it got an update in 1996 so it will be ones from that year that i look at. is there a dual fuel conversion out there?

NAM,

good choice but have a look at overall vehicle weight, quite light and likely to be pushed around by a buggy and trailer that probably outweigh the tow vehicle.

My 2c.

Now a good value vehicle, a mat had one on the road for under 6g after buying as is private sale and fixed what needed for a full roadworthy.

N*A*M if your looking at a modern day Chero I agree with Lockee, you may have a prob with it being pushed around it a bit.

On the other hand;

Why not look at an older style Chero, maybe 84-87. 3 tonne of Jeep with a nice 360 in the front which can be easily converted to gas, these are also a nice easy 4x4 to drive with plently of get up and go. These are a fair bit cheaper to buy than the new guys and you get that nice full V8 sound.

I'd also say too light to tow a lot. My 2000 XJ weighed 1810kg on the weighbridge and thats with dual batteries, false floor, larger tyres and two people aboard.

How much are you looking at pulling with it?

Cheers

Xj is rated for about 2270kg......
I've towed a bit with ours and that included my 2kkg TJ on a heavy rental trailer (to TTC).....The XJ struggled and often felt is was bing pshed along......
Agree with Lexx - a FSJ is a better option.....

in the owner manual it has 3250 kg towing capacity (on a 96 cherokee sport) and on my tow bar , which is aftermarket, it has a tow capacity of 3000kg on the plate. I prolly wouldnt tow 3 tonnes with it due to it being a little light, though it would phase me to tow say, 2,200kg.
One of the reasons i bought it was for the tow capacity as we travel with the boat a fair bit (2 ton)
Must be the only bloke in melb to hope its gona rain on the weekend :)

also tow with my XJ only a off road camper but it gets pushed around a bit fitted elec brakes to camper at least feel a bit more relaxed with them Dont know for sure but the FSJeep may come as a carburated engine which is easier to convert to LPG also they run sweeter on both petrol and gas

Just had a look at my user manual 2001 XJ
Engine GTW Max load at Coupling
2.5L Diesel 1400kg 210kg
2.5L Gasoline 907kg 104kg
4.0L Gasoline 2268kg 340kg

Trailer brakes required for trailers over 750 kg

Hope this helps

I would not recommend an XJ as a tow rig, From experience the 4.0 while a great motor unloaded, it is down right gut less with even 1t in tow.
I towed my scout to/fro the painter about 2.5t all up and struggled and over heated the auto. That was towing on the flat motor way trying to do 100kmh

NAM, Dont do it! They dont have the strength to pull that kinda weight, dont you think I would still be using one to tow my rig.
