Hilux Leaves, SPUA - Anyone done it?
Yep im the butcher
there is a chassis extension, but it is part of the bar, we also moved the front spring mount up, and used longer shackles, which took up some spring length, we also moved the rear mount of the front spring back.
For a car with wide track spring width, it had some narley flex
If I did it again I would set the springs into the chassis, less stuff to hook up on and would drop the buggy leaf, cuz it way lacked roll stiffness on steep climbs.

so what is the verdict on the spring rate of the hilux springs??? how many leaves should i run and which ones do i remove so its a little more suited to zuk weight rather than lux weight... im thinking stiff springs are going to be my issue here?
on and im not going 3/4 elliptical =P hehe just front lux springs all round spua. down the track, lux diffs spoa will go under =D

This is all great info guys very interesting, unbulievable flex outta that zook. Can anyone verify the length increase in sierra rears to hilux rears?? i want the rear diff to move back 200mm to use a front drive shaft in the rear, will the springs give me anywhere near enough movement?? or will i just have to go custom shaft in the rear?? just wanted it to be a simple bolt up job with the tailshaft. My thoughts are run hilux rears in the rear, rears up front. Any help will be apreciated.
thanks alot.

with my lil bro's Zuk I am thinking that I would like to set it up with hilux fronts out back and sierra rears out front .. spring under .. for now
Lop off the old hangers at the back and extend the chassis a bit up front (perhaps redrill the spring pad to keep the front diff basically in standard position perhaps only 30mm or so forward .. instead of the full 50 or 60 mm that rear up front normally creates)

Hilux fronts are 120mm longer than zuk rears... im putinng lux fronts all round to get equal articulation all the way round... no point having a shorter spring up front if you can avoid it =)
we will be moving the rear diff back slightly and front forward slightly...

your front will flex more as they are more inboard on the chassisalien wrote:Hilux fronts are 120mm longer than zuk rears... im putinng lux fronts all round to get equal articulation all the way round... no point having a shorter spring up front if you can avoid it =)

if you were to use the same style spring, in this case stock hilux front, after owning as many hiluxs as I have you will never get two the same
different weights over front and rear axles
and its simply my opinion

Cool .. been a while since I did it ... or even actually cared exactly how far it was .. so long as tyres dont rub firewalls .. perhaps 20mm then.Gwagensteve wrote:I understand that ruf movles the axle forward 40mm.

You may get 50/50, But that is not so good, you will lose all roll stiffness in the rear, then when you climb, it will just pick up and drop on its side.alien wrote:nar the fronts are staying as is, but the rears are moving inboard almost in line with fronts to correct that =)
still not 100% sure on the fuel tank, will burn that bridge when we get to it.

I dont mean to hijack but can anyone tell me how much longer hilux rears are than zook rears, would there be anychance a springs would move the rear diff back around 200mm?? so its simplly bolt up a front shaft, the reason being is if i "booty fab" as you call it up a shaft it wont be balanced?? Has anyone does this before??

Smalltalk,
Just go coils and be done with it.
Re running hilux fronts in the rear, these would have to be about the same length as sierra rears wouldn't they? You may as well just use Hilux rears.
I also think that Josh's old car (the white one pictured) used IFS rears all round which are longer than solid axle rears.
Just go coils and be done with it.

if u run hilux rears backwards (long half forward)small talk wrote:So what your saying is no bloody way it would move it back 8ins, i thort not, im thinking of running hilux fronts in the rear and rears up front and it looks like booty fabing up a tail shaft is in. anyone done this or knows of a place that does??
small talk.
u should be able to move it back 7.5 inch or so
just goin off memory
zuk rears 40" center pin 20"
toy rears 48" center pin 20.5?

Thanks alot for the spring measurements Redzook, running the hilux rear backward should be enough to just just run a front shaft in the rear which might work, and it'll be super flex and have a huge Wheelbase. what do you all think about RUF hilux rears backward in the rear?? And about the coil conversion ive got all i need at my disposal, coils, link material, father who is a sh*t hot welder but its less likely to be noticed. bit sus having leaf front coil rear and trying to pass that of as stock.

Smalltalk,
Have you taken a good look at your car lately? it looks to be far from "stock".
With the rear lux leaves in backwards you may need to re do your axle pearches, no great stress in doing this but you will need to take it into account.

Yes you got me not so stock, thanks for the heads up hopefully picking up the lux springs tomorow arvo and ill do the measure up and calculations and see how i go, anyone know what sort of shocks will be needed for the amount of flex?? Rancho 9000s?? will lux rears 3 leaf packs be soft?? and will they need a wrap bar?? anyone know if it'll be needed??
