Swift carbs
Swift carbs
I was rather generously gifted a swift carb to put on my sierra the other day, as my thing has been running crap since I got it. Now it's like a street weapon! It's made a huge difference, the car is heaps nippier now... don't get me wrong, it's still slow, but less slow!
Is there anything different about them? Bigger jets or something? Or was my old one just fully stuffed? It's made a huge difference and now the car idles and runs fine to boot.

Re: Swift carbs
I am really keen to find out more info as mine also runs and idles like crap, I have put a kit through, blown out all all passageways, poked fine wire through jets etc, etc, etc
To get a new or reco'd carby is almost more than the zook is worth.
I have heard of webbers - but these apparently have angle issues
Also heard of early carolla carbs, VW carbs & hyundai carbs but cant find any useful info.

It's off a mk 1 swift/barina, I'm not sure what year but I can find out if you really want.
It bolted onto the manifold, but all the fittings on it are different, the only vacuum line I could be bothered working out is the advance to the dizzy. The hat seems to be in a different place even, I had to cut the pipe to the airfilter to make it reach, and then tape the hole up The fuel-in thing is different, that required a bit of screwing around, and the coolant inlet/outlets were so corroded they broke off inside the new hoses I attached.
Then the thing wouldn't start for ages, turned out it was a solitary cable I cut but have no idea what it's for... why on earth does a carb need a cable going into it? Bloody japs, made everything more complicated than it needs to be.
But it seems to be going well and going hard atm!
BTW I also have a 92 Swift, I checked the carb on that for reference and appears to be very different, different throats, vacuum nipples etc. So I'm not sure if all Swift carbs bolt up.

It would be the fuel cut off solenoid. So when you turn the igintiion off it cuts fuel to the carb. ( I think anyway)OldGold wrote:It's off a mk 1 swift/barina, I'm not sure what year but I can find out if you really want.

I just remember the downdraught webber on my old Capri - it had one hose for fuel, one for vacuum advance, and that was it. Went hard and never had an issue with it. Plus without all that choke crap in the way probably flowed a lot better too.
Aside from anything, in a car that has all the aerodynamics of a fridge, the creature comforts of a tent and a ride quality comparable to a skateboard, is all that cold start, automatic choke stuff really worth the effort? I'd rather it took a bit longer to warm up and was a bit harder to start but went harder and was more reliable and easier to repair out on the tracks.

After having carby problems all weekend and half the day off I took a risk and spent 65$ on a 85 swift carb. have stipped it down to just fuel in and vac advance out. It seems to idle alright, I tell U how it goes when we fix the tail shalft and actully drive it. Internalls are very much the same to the naked eye. I don't know if jets are different.
Its a wheelbase thing
i did that to the standard one just trying to get a bit more life out off it .Rhett wrote:After having carby problems all weekend and half the day off I took a risk and spent 65$ on a 85 swift carb. have stipped it down to just fuel in and vac advance out. Hears some pics hope you can see them.i took the plate that is under the carb out so there is no water in it and i joined the pipes with a piece of copper, all the choke is gone exept the butter fly,so there is only fuel in and vac advance a couple of hose's that are blocked but look like there doing sothing.
