Got my turbo efi gq running
Got my turbo efi gq running
Hi guys,
I finally finshed the turbo setup on my swb gq and did some tuning on the dyno over the weekend. She made 165rwkw's at 15 psi with 35 baja claws on a dyno dynamics dyno. She makes full boost at 2100rpm. Not sure how much power could be made, but i was happy with a safe, very low timing tune for now, and after driving it, dont think i need anymore.
Cant believe how hard it goes and how nice it is to drive compared with the standard carby setup. You can cruise around with barely any throttle.
I have to get a recirculating blow off valve asap, cause the turbo flutter atm would leave any chapel street vl to shame. Its fun for the moment though.
Setup includes:
Front mount 600x300x75 intercooler
hi flow t3 turbo
diesel exhaust manifold
gq efi inlet manifold, with gtr skyline injectors
gtr fuel pump
Autronic smc ecu.
custom hall effect dissy etc
3inch exhaust
I was wondering if anyone knows how much power is lost through 35's compared with 31's etc. Was trying to figure out the drivetrain loss?
Also, i have a safari snorkel to go on, will it flow the amount of air required? Some say yes, some say no. Any input appreciated cause i would rather not have to use two
Will post up some pics and dyno graph as soon as possible.
Now its time to get it dirty!!
cheers

i read some where that going to 35's from standard you loose 16% of your power not sure how true this is though
i get my new ratio's in soon will let you know if i can tell a big difference

Re: Got my turbo efi gq running
From the amount of people i spoken to about my diesel i need to flow more air and the safari units on the GQ just dont flow enough.Quadcamshorty wrote: Also, i have a safari snorkel to go on, will it flow the amount of air required? I personally wouldnt run 2 i would remove your old one and get 3-4" pipe put in place the cost wont be to much most place will do it for under $500 and you can sell your old safari unit for $200 or so..

that's
Good to hear you have got it all running and pumping out some good power.
Have you done anything to the internals of the motor to run that sort of boost? It is quite high but would sound o so good.
congrats on doing what would appear a pretty well priced set up to produce good numbers I hope that it lasts for you.
Cheers

thanks for the comments guys,
fatassgq,
I havnt done anything to the motor, its a low k motor that was run on petrol only in an auto, so it seems to be in good condition.
With such a good low compression ratio i thought 15 psi was fairly mild, and it dosnt have any timing in it, so its definately on the safe side tuning wise. A few people had told me anything around that power level was quite safe for the tb42. After all it is a nissan!!!
cheers

mate it sounds awsome. can you elaberate on the dizzy mods?
are the gtr injectors at or close to there max duty cycle? Also wondering what size t3 you have as in exhaust housing wise?
if i have worked it out right you have around 221hp at the rear tyres with 35's.
don't worry about putting the chapel st vl's to shame with your blow off valve, with that sort of hose power you should be able to kick all them poser's ass's
cheers wes.

gq trol, the autronic smc retails for about $1600 aus dollars. The dizzy mod converts it to a hall effect sensor electronic pickup.
Not sure what info you need, let me know if you need more. Will get a price for it today.
lockee, I know we already spoke about it, but i was hoping someone would say, nah mate it will be fine. Dreamin but worth a try. I think i'll make up a 3 or 4 inch custom one.
tuf045, not sure what nifo you want on the dizzy, let me know if you need more than above.
The gtr inj are 440cc, when we tune gtr skylines we can get around 270kw atw's before needed to change, i'm running the same rail pressure so they have alot left.
The t3 has a .82 rear housing.
cheers

am I right in thinking that if you already have an injected motor then you wouldn't need the 'hall effect' mod? Or am I totally off.
Also have ya got any pics of the engine bay now.
Was curious as to how you have plumbed up the intercooler to the inlet.
From the sounds of it you will quite easily get more from this than what you have now so that is great. Not that you really need it.
The small turbo size no doubt helps a lot with low down grunt.
Once again good on ya

A speed camera would have prevented that!
I have a Mav carby with low k's 145K, and dream of doing it too but best left as a dream for now.Quadcamshorty wrote:thanks for the comments guys,

My mate turbocharged his 4500 GU but blew a hole in the side of the block a few days ago. The engine was under load as it was towing a heavy trailer. It was a big turbo installation and putting out 220kw plus. Someone wrote that the 4.2 rods are stronger than the 4.5. Yours sounds like a cautious approach and should be a winner.
Well done.
Need pix.

ludacris, I am putting some prices together atm for a kit that we are going to make available.
Will let you know asap.
tuf045, I tried to get the info from my supplier today but ran out of time, will let you know tomorrow, but i'm 99% the hall effect setup is out of another car, should be fairly cheap to reproduce.
fatassgq, yeh mate you are right, the inj motor dissy would do the job, i have to check whats in it exactly, but it would only require a very small mod either way to talk to the autronic.
I will have engine bay and car pics tomorrow, i just wanted to tidy the wiring up first.
But the cooler pipe from the throttle body runs over the rocker cover, along the radiator hose and down past the radiator, just inside the washer bottle, the other side goes pretty much straight through past the powersteer pump. i had to remove the standard ps cooler, but i was installing a bigger one anyway.
I reckon 200 atw would be pretty easy, but i cant see the need atm and yes the turbo size equals a heap of grunt.
The only problem is that after just finishing it, i have been giving it a fair bit of stick, and at $1.20 a litre i dont need to comment on how expensive the weekend fuel bill was.
Its pretty good when you take easy thank god.
roadnazi, i hope i dont put a rod out the block!! Ha Ha
Who did the work on the GU?? and what did it have?
cheers

Sounds like a quick bullet of a truck, just curious can you do wheel stands??. How easy is this modification done, post some pics if you can thanks champ!

It was a system supplied by Safari system, Big turbo,,,I mean serious hp.Quadcamshorty wrote:ludacris, I am putting some prices together atm for a kit that we are going to make available.

Kane, I am on owner of ICE Performance, we supply autronic ecu's.
Retail is $1690 inc air temp sensor and software etc.. No it doesnt plug in, it requires the loom to be merged with the original, if you have one. I just made a custom loom up from scratch.
I will have prices for the whole job and pictures later today.
cheers

my 2 cents
just thought i would give nigel the thumbs up with his gq
ive had my car tuned with him very impressed with his work
i will spread the word way down where i am, with the turbo conversion
any ideas on intercooler kit price?
did you use standard throttle body sensor? or something else?
by the autronic is the only way to fly with custom stuff like this well priced and way more reliable than other stuff on market except for high $$$$ stuff
any ways hope to see you wheelstanding up gembrook or even labby along powerlines
the exhaust manifold is of a td42 turbo right is that a t3 flange or did you have something made up??
and are gtr injectors a straight fit up??

mgundle, thanks for the kind words mate, which car did i tune?
cooler inc mounting bracket and full piping inc hose clamps etc will be around $1100.
Will have full prices for everything soon.
yeh standard tps is fine with autronic
the gtr inj are direct fit, and the manifold was also t3.

Nigel, very impressive.
Is the turbo of a VL commodore? Are you going to get it engineered?
Does the Autronic allow for dual mapping? The reason I ask is. Can it be run on dual fuel as well?
I'd be interested to know what sort of costs are involved in a turbo system like this.
Hmmmmm seems like a nice project to build a water to air intercooler sytem for.
Regards Andrew.

awill4x4, yeh its a hi/flow vl turbo.
Prob wont bother with the engineer. After driving my 10sec supra around for the last year, if i get pulled over by the cops in this thing, i might fall off my chair. Touch wood now i've mentioned it!
The autronic doesnt have a switch style dual mapping that i know of, but i will check that for ya. Obviously you can load whatever map you want in off a laptop.
Was very much thinking of a water to air, but i couldnt go past the look and the 90% on road driving efficiency of the air to air. For off road use i'm gonna stick a thermo on it, and maybe water spray. Just depends how hot it gets. After all, from the power its got on road, i'd hate to see what happens off road in low range, will probably never need more than half throttle. Cant wait to find out!
cheers

quadcamshorty, do the gtr injectors fit straight into the tb42e fuel rail or do you need the gtr fuel rail as well? I will be running a very similar set up in the not to distant future (time pending), but i will only be running 6-7psi est rwh 185. I noticed you dont run a rising rate fuel regulator? Is this not needed with the autronics computer? Where abouts did you re mount the power steering cooler? What are your thoughts on water injection when running hi boost?
Cheers
