How far can leaves bend the wrong way?

Post by Stoo »

Hi guys, I have SPOA and Ironman springs, I get a nice amount of flex but I'm worried about the springs. Here is a pic, is this ok or do you think I will warp them fairly quickly, this is the front but the rear is almost worse!

they can bend up as far as you let them, if you are worried then adjust your bumpstop height (ie make bumpstops longer)

Those look to be some seriously big drop shackles

Mine also bend up further than that, they are almost inverterd at rest.

Do you have a track bar to restrict the axle wrap?

Stoo, post up a pick of your left knuckle, your histeer geometry looks pretty good.
Your springs look sus to me, your springs may have lots of droop, but they are not going to compress much, which will make them bottom out all the time (lengthening the bump stops will make this worse) are they fronts or rears?

How do them great big shackles even work?

When i put mine up on max flex (i have stock ones) they are really bent up in there! Yours look just about flat...

Also when you spoa do u normally leave the load leaves in there? its not really clear in the photo but removing them will give u more flex.

Hi, I'm sort of experimenting with most of this stuff, there aren't anywhere near as many products available over here for Samurai's as everyone is more into thier Land Rovers.

The shackles are pretty big I agree but they seem to work a bit at least.

I do have a traction bar - pics below.

I have some lowered bumpstops to save the springs at the rear and just finishing off the front setup so wondering how far the spring could be allowed to end.

Here are some flex pics too and some of the high steer.

Nice, you could pretty much let it flex as much as it wants and put the bumpstops just before something will get stressed or streched to far like the shocks but they look like pretty decent ones, the tyres look good on the suzuki too lol.

Do those shackles have somethine that stops them completly going flat or inverting? Or do they just do what they want........

you can see there is a metal tab that is welded in place to let the shackles unfold out to vertical. maybe not the best, but there is something to stop the shackle inverting.

looks like all the travel is from droop, and because you have the scissor shackles on all 4 corners, this helps. compression doesn't seem too good. maybe due to the shackle design, it wont let the springs compress fully?

I guess this will wind you up then - those tyres are available for about £50 over here so typing that into an internet currency converter means they are about $117 of you dollars?

Thats cheap to me??? They are 32" tall but are 16" rim diameter meaning there are limited rims - I'm using the ones from a LWB GV vitara as they have the largest offset I could find.

I'm gonna fiddle with my bumpstops this weekend and get some new longer front shocks, see if I can improve the flex.

I am guessing that they are retread's that I have seen in quite a few of the UK landrover mags .

Don´t get me wrong Stoo, but I think those "scissor shackles" are just about the most disastrous mod I´ve seen in a long time. Thats my first impression at least. That zook must be hellish to drive at anything over crawling speeds. However, if you´re happy with them and you feel that they work: Golly for you!
"Scissor shackles" are something totally new to me in fact.
There ARE ways to eliminate the lateral movement of the axles that don´t affect articulation and greatly enhance road handling. I´d say you need something like that.
By the way, is your zook street legal in the UK with the mods you´ve made?

My zook is "kinda" road legal - it passed an MOT test which is a standard test accross all vehicles to test roadworthiness but that in itself doens't mean its road legal. It has all the lights/identifications you need to be road legal - the only real question is the tyres sticking out too far and the front numberplate.

Luckily the police over here are far to busy dealing with pikeys and chavs in there boy racer cars!!!

Here is another pic of the rear flexing - I still dont like the shackles either but I dont think I could get this sort of flex without them?

The question remains, how much flex do you need :?:

I have the scissor shackles (different design to yours) in the front of my car. They provide lots of uncontrolled travel and even with my heavy diffs very limited traction when the suspension droops.

I got the tyres from www.sowdentyres.co.uk who is a really helpful chap but I doubt it would be cost effective to ship them to OZ, but they are made in the colway factory so I imagine you can get them from any colway distributor.

Another place to try would be www.tyresdirect.uk.com but again this is a uk site.

Here is another thought then, I f I replace the front springs with rears and ditch the scissor shackles would I be better to use a slightly extended shackle? If so how long? Will putting the rear springs at the front with just an extended shackle work? I know it will move my axle forward this would be good as it would clear my arch better.

Cheers
