charcoal canister

Post by jacka »

When my sierra is at freeway speeds for longer than 30mins, the motor starts to splutter and lose power. It doesnt do it driving around town, it doesn't miss or anything either. Ive been told to check the charcoal canister on the firewall to see if it is working properly.
Has anyone experienced the same, and if so, how do you fix it?

It sounds like a fuel supply issue, as at higher speeds your using fuel faster than the system can supply.

this could be fuel pump issue

or a fuel line/filter blockage

or yes, cannister can stuff up (it lets air back into the tank as fuel is sucked out, thus preventing a vapour lock)

Does tank suck air when you open the cap? If so vapour lock could be an issue.
I have had 3 cannisters die on me, at the moment I have just blocked of the vaccuum line to the cannister, and am running the tank breather away from the engine/sparky bits, until I get a new one.

I have no idea, sorry, never bought a new cannister, always used old 2nd hand ones. And still haven't replaced this one, yet, I just fitted a fuel filter to end of breather, and it hangs on back of ute...Have bought a new fuel pump, new was only $80, but was a few years back.
