Shock Hoops - Hilux

I'm about to fit my shock hoops to the front of my Hilux. Is there any need to weld reinforcements/gussets on at the same time?

I have fabricated strengthening plates for the steering box, should i run similar under the shock hoops?

i dont run any on mine but it wouldnt be a bad idea to.... wouldnt hurt right

I couldn't see any disadvantage either, but just thought i'd see as most engineers don't like to have any more welding to the chassis than necessary.

at first we did make some to go on mine however in the end we just couldnt be bothered to tell u the truth

james,
i you have some similar to the sanke racing once, i would difinately brace to the chassis rails. i've seen them snap off and it stuffs the chassis side wall.

reinforce it! it takes a lot less time to do now than when they rip off the chassis and you have to pull it all apart and put it back together.
trust me i had my driver side one go at 100km/hr i came to a safe stop but think what would happen if it f%$ked with your steering at that speed.

was thinking of running a plate "laminating" the chassis on which the tube welds to then two angled gussets between the upright of the hoop and the chassis.

I sent some pics including this one for an engineer to look at. The hoop has been braced but hard to tell from the angle of the photo.
He replyed saying the hoop must be braced due to the large forces it must absorb.

ive got superior hoops and thats how they are done, with the twin tube behind bracing it

this is what can happen if it isn't done

the way stumpy has done it is the way mine is now as well as a small triangle peice on the under side of where you put that red one

i have seen so many shock hoops tare off, leaving holes in the chassis rails as illustrated above.

gussets are absolutely necessary.

I just ripped one of my hoops off the other day...

, and the other one wasnt far from it too.

plated and welded them enough to get me round for the next few days, til i can get someone to brace the rear of the hoop for me.

after reading this and have it happen to me a week later, id say its necessary to brace them

will put pics up later

Just had mine braced a couple weeks ago as my chassis was cracking and I was half way to looking like the pic with the hoop ripped off.

Definately brace the top.

heres what i did.

A tube of each vertical section of each hoop back to the top corner of the chassis and fish plates at the mountings for the main section of the hoop.

You install shock hoops because you can no longer fit long enough shocks in the stock towers for the suspension droop the truck has, so yes its worth it if you need them.

No you dont need a body lift.
