Old 88rr still tougher then toy's.

About 4 weeks ago i did a simpson desert trip with 7 vehicles 3 rangies, 2 90 seriers Pardos and a GU partol. About a week into the trip i drove up one of the 100 sand hills we had driven up in my old 88 ranige, my brother in his 2year old prado followed my tracks up the same hill. About half way up the hill everybody hears a BAG! and the prados done a rear diff.

So we call the nearest Toyota dealer they say "if you can still drive it then take it to Brisbane and we will have a look" so we drive home back to brissy.

After 2days in the workshop Toyota says that the problem was caused by water in the diff and it won't be covered. My brother replies back saying that the car was given a full service (diff oils changed) by toyota 2days before we left for Bridsville. Toyota then says the problem was caused by driver error and it won't be covered.

I can't see how this problem was caused by driver error as second gear low range was used, the revs didn't climb past 35000rpm (its a 3.4 petrol) and the hill wasn't even hard!

The last option we have is a friend in Carins filmed the prado going up the hill, hopefully toyota will see it wasn't driver error and it will be covered. But the film will take a 3 dyas to get to brissy and the car has now been in the workshop for 3 1/2 weeks.

I am a little surprised in the way toyota has delt with this problem because the other prado owner on the trip had broken a front diff in the past and it was covered no questions asked.

my mate has had 3 front difs in a 100series replaced under warranty, thats with 5" lift, 35" tyres and lockers

maybe post this in the Toyota section to get some feedback from the Toyota guys as they may be able to offer first hand advice

I must admit 35000rpm is a lot. :shock:

Seriously though, Toyota are just doing anything to get out of the claim. They can clearly tell the difference between driver error and water in the diff, and on the sand I doubt very much that it was driver error as there is nothing to shock the system.

Funnily enough that a bloke I know with a 100 series IFS 'cruiser blew the front diff at levuka last year had his fixed bt toyotta no q's askerd and he had 33' MT/R's fitted and left them on when he took it to his toy dealer.

On the other hand a mate with a S2 Disco with 245/75's on broke his rear diff that same trip. LR didn't do anyhting to help him and he even had to downsize to keep his warranty valid and in fear of not voiding it. it was fixed, but grudgingly.

He can't wait til the warranty runs out since he's got plans to fit bigger tyres and lockers anyhow.

Surely, fitting bigger tyres and lockers wouldn't void the entire warranty would it? If an electric mirror failed for example, the dealer couldn't argue that the bigger tyres caused it and refuse warranty, could they?

I didn't think so til I found out for myself.

This is why i'll NEVER buy a new car in general. LR IMO were trying to weasel there way out of a warranty claim that's all.

AFAIK by law they can void the warranty on the modified component, and anything else that is a related system, but not on the whole vehicle. However it depends of course on the fineprint in the actual warranty agreement.
