DOHC SOHC 3.5Lt NL

G'day guys, I am new to the forum and I am about to buy a Pajero (probably NL V6). My question relates to DOHC and SOHC 3.5Lt motors. I haven't looked at any yet but I have asked a guy over the phone about his one (99 NL) that is for sale and he indicates that he thinks his has the DOHC engine. My understanding is that NL only came with the SOHC. Can anyone please tell me how I can tell from looking at the engine whether it is DOHC or SOHC (I would presume the DOHC has wider rocker covers to fit the dual pulleys??????).

All petrol NLs left the factory with the SOHC motor, and a '99 model is well into the series. If it has the DOHC motor it's had a transplant.

Personally, I've never tried to compare the two, but I expect the rocker covers will have some markings somewhere.

Visit a few Mitsubishi dealers, and learn the differences?

Yep open the bonnet and it says on the rocker covers 24 valve DOHC or 24 valve SOHC. Once you have seen the two you will tell the difference straight away.

Thats interesting my Pajero was built and bought in 1998, yet it has a 3.5ltr DOHC engine, have had the car since new. :?

Different vehicle for different markets. The Australian market has a preference for lower-revving torquey motors - like the SOHC. Some other markets don't mind using revs, so a high revving motor is more desirable - like the DOHC.
