Factory turbo 100 series V's aftermarket turbo diesel 100 se
A mate of mine is in the market for a new 100 series landcruiser and is not sure wheather to go for a new IFS turbo diesel or a live axle diesel with aftermarket turbo.
The IFS 100 has a weak front end but have heaps of grunt.
My mates not sure about the 100 series with aftermarket turbo because of possible warranty issues and not as powerful as the factory turbo model
Please help.

Know a guy that turbo'd his 1HZ, and he is not happy with the results. He has spent alot of extra dollars getting it setup better (better than the installers did) and still doesnt think it has as much power as a factory turbo. I think it owes him more than $5k now, hes done exhaust etc etc.
The extra $4k it may cost you to get a factory turbo diesel(if you can find one) is more than worth it in my opinion. An aftermarket turbo is going to cost you at least $3k.

My understanding is that the factory turbo version is not just a turbo bolted on. I think the bottom end (at the very least) is upgraded compared to the naturally aspirated 100.
I'm suprised an aftermarket turbo doesnt feel better than the factory. I always thought Toyota were pretty conservative with the factory turbo setup.
Is it only the standard wagon with live axle or is the naturally aspirated GXL also live axle?

Its technically the 105 series that had a solid axle, live axle was essentially an option in the early "100" series and is no longer available.
Im pretty sure the turbo motor required independant suspension for more room underneath. I think this is what my brother was told when he baught his QXL 1hdfet

Yes that is partly correct, but they have also done the head. It is now an electronic controlled twin cam 24 valve motor that has direct injection as opposed to the 1Hz which is 12 valave non- direct injected motor.
Turboing a 1Hz is better than a standard 1Hz but nothing when compared to the factory turbo diesel.
A point to note that the 100s with a solid axle front only comes out with a 1Hz. You cannot get a factory turbo diesel with a solid axle, only IFS but personally I would consider the IFS and do a solid axle conversion. Best of both worlds. Thats my 2 cents worth...

Does he want it for its suspension functionality or for the power, that is the question he has to answer for himself. Fuel economy would be much better with this new donk wouldn't it. He would have to enquire about the warranty with toy-ota before even thinking of it...wouldn't he....

Main thing he is concerned about is the warrantys when fitting an aftermarket turbo to a new cruiser.

If you get the turbo & intercooler done at new (1500Ks) then the dealer fitting the system picks up the new motor warranty.muddyperils wrote:Does he want it for its suspension functionality or for the power, that is the question he has to answer for himself.
