help me make an exhaust decision for my zook

Ok my zooks exhaust has finally died.. i have 2 options

1. A normal stainless steel exhaust $180

or

2. $160 for the 2 inch cat back system in mild steel . Comes with a straight through sport performance muffler.

for the 2nd option it will cost me $320 in stainless steel and i cant afford that

What one should i get?

Go the cat back mild steel. i don't think the zook will last the length of the stainless.

lol i hope it lasts a few more years.. planning on changing things as they go.. but yeh i think the sports performance give more power?

Yup, just plan for extractors next. Mild will last quite a few years even near the beach.

Well you can always powder coat the mild steel in a few months when money is available
(do this before the extactors or else you never get round to it

)

Powdercoating is a type of paint/paintstyle. Dry paint particles are applied in a powder and baked on. In a nutshell.

Anyway costs maybe a few hundred, not completely sure though.

Have a think about this.
Normally, the factoey exhaust system lasts pretty well, and it is nit out of the question to get 10 years or more out of the stock set up. This is just plain aluminised mild steel, just lik eyou buy from the exhaust shop.

If we are talking about, say, a 15 year old sierra, and the car is doing any sort of off road work, then there is no way that that car will last longer than a well built mild steel exhaust.

For my mind, stainless is for countries that salt their roads in winter, guys who live on the beach, or for the bling.

I thend to find that like tyres on sierras, the exhaust is usually damaged by off road use or gets modified beacuse of other changes long before it ever gets the chance to rust out.

Save the $$$ and go for mild steel.

my 2" mild steel close to 10yr old now and no prob, cost $120 at the time but mine's pre cat.
with headers & just a universal muffler, not antisocial but breathes well.

hey got my 2" exhaust with straight through muffler

87 zook has no cat converter so didnt need that..

Next thing is extractors.. will it be worth it?

if i bought 2nd hand extractors with just surface rust they be fine?

and an exhaust place will do them up for me? do they need to be 2" piping as well?

I made my exhaust at home on the weekend. 2.25" straight through with only 2 bends, bothg under 10 degrees.

Whole system including extractors owes me less than $380

extractors were $220. Not sure of brand, but I'll see what I can find out.

I just press bent the rest of the system, but as I said, there are stuff all bends in it, so the pipe barely deformed where I bent it, so I should get maximum power gains from the system.

i am sure i red somewhere that if you go up. inches its the equiv of a mandrel bend. Ie 1.5 inch mandre is same as 2 inch press bent (roughly i know ) it was an articule about not wasting money before exploring alternatives.

By the way Gutless do you have a link to this car on cardomain... i can't seem to find it

Just one thing to thnk about your zorst.... dont make it to dam loud

i have extractors to a 2 1/4 with 1 straight through lukey sports muffler. and it is way to loud... anoying at the best of sounds.. althoug sounds good reving the tits of it in the mud.

I left room up the back for a resonator if need be. Besides, I'm running a 1.6 litre engine, so the extra exhaust gas should make it a little less boomy

You can make yor own. They are a very simple construction.

Most are about 25 - 30 cm long ( 1ft )
