What shocks to use for longer travel
What shocks to use for longer travel
I got an 84 sierra SWB 1.0L with 29" muddies. I just made up my own 2" longer shackles and now will need to get some new shocks with longer travel. I have no sway bars and i only use my sierra for weekend fun. I don't want to spend much but still want to get as much travel as i can. I don't care about the on road ride just want to get more articulation.
Can anyone give me some advise on where to look and what to get.

Have a search first.
As well: look at the Cofap and monroe, kyb shocks for low $$ and work ok,
I use hilux fronts and jackaroo rears in mine.
Other ones i have heard about are camira/early celica rears and ford explorer shocks.
BTW: Search
cheers

I bought some shocks for the front of mine today, Gabriels form Super Cheap, due to sale cost $71 for the pair. Compressed measure approx 330mm and extended 570mm. They are almost 100mm longer than the shocks I got with my 2" lift kit.(Iam also running extended shackles)

They were the gas ryder vst part # 69868. If your planning on putting in a lift kit as well then these are they way to go. I f not you might want to get something that compresses up a tad more. There are some other models that were labelled specifacally for 4WD with good measurements but they were more expensive. Just check mout the model book hanging of the shelf. In the back pages is all the specs on measurements etc.

I have vs commodore wagon rear shocks up front...
My brake lines are going to require some attention if Ifit shackles..

I added an inch to the bumpstops and its sweet as.Royce wrote:They will fit your 1 litre but you still need to space the bumpstop, IMO unless you have a bit of lift and maybe shackles it isn't worth losing the wheel travel cause you won't have it going down.
Better off with the HT Holden rears unless you plan mods later

Does the sierra use different size / style of shocks in the front & rear or are they all the same. If there all the same i might just buy 4 of the gabriel shocks and just put them in when i get some spare time.
Also, at what stage would you need to alter your brake lines? Do you do this if you are increasing your wheel travel? I think i may have to do this.

I used early model RWD Toyota Starlet rear shocks on the front of my 410. These are identical to the standard ones only 4-5 inches longer .
I had to raise the shock mounts to get them to work but it made heaps of difference .(60mm extra downward travel on standard suspension and over 100 with drop shackles)
