GQ RD28T Gearbox
GQ RD28T Gearbox
Just had a question.
Is it so that the 5 speed gearbox in a GQ with RD28T engine is the same as in the Nissan 300 ZX?, and if so which year of 300ZX, the one from 84-89 or the one with twin turbo from 90-?
Cheers

The VL turbo, is this a Nissan?RUFF wrote:VL turbo's run the same box as well.
We don`t have to many Skylines in my country. I have seen a few
Skylines R33.
How much power/torque do you think this gearbox can handle in a Patrol and running on road and using your brain?
Have a highly modified RD28T, and Daikin clutch
Thanks
The VL Turbo is a Holden but is Powered by a RB30 fitted with a T03 Turbo also known as a RB30T. In a VL they will handle artound 350-400HP if driven nice but i have heard of a lot of RB30 Patrols blowing these gearboxes because of the weight they need to move.vn15 wrote:The VL turbo, is this a Nissan?RUFF wrote:VL turbo's run the same box as well.

Its torque that kills a gearbox, not so much power. Gearboxes are usually rated to a torque figure, rather than a hp figure. The heavier the vehicle, the more torque the gearbox has to handle. Many light trucks have less hp than a lot of cars, but the gearboxes are 3x the size because of the weight they have to move.
I would think that with an RD28T, modified or not, provided you're not lugging the motor you're not going to overstress the gearbox. Even though the box may be smaller than the box behind the 4.2, your diff gears are lower which reduces the load on the gearbox. If you're running large tyres, this reduces your safety margin.
