my 2.8itd had done just over 210K and I reckon it doesn't have the power is used to. it feels like the turbo boost is coming on later than usual. admittantly i've gone to 31x10.5 tyres (up from 30x9.5), but it isn't as responsive down low. the turbo seems to come on at closer to 3000 rpm, where as before it pulled hard from a little over 2000 rpm.
could it be that the turbo is not spooling up as quick ? possibly due to wear and tear ?

aaaaah never. is this something i can do myself, or will i need a specialist diesel mechanic to do this. another thing, should i be able to spin the turbine by hand (removing the inlet and "flicking" it with my finger)?

Yes, the turbine should spin by hand quite easily. If it doesn't, that's probably your problem.
I'm no diesel expert, so I'm not sure what's involved with checking the injector timing. It may be possible to do it at home, but you're probably better off taking it to a diesel specialist for injector and pump overhaul, and get them to check out the turbo too.

I had a major service and checkup on mine a few weeks ago by west end diesel in sydney, so here's some more food for thought for you...
I asked them to remove the turbo as part of the checkup, mine has 310,000km on it now, and they sent it away to a turbo specialist, they were more than happy with the wear it had in it and didn't recommend anything (although to completely check it requires a $4>500 rebuild) but seeing as they thought it was fine i chucked it back on untouched.
mine was getting really bad down low, very rough and down on power at 2000 and below, the injectors were replaced and the pump was adjusted and now it'll just pull in 4th from abt 1300 without too much complaining. (but happiest from 1500 > 1600) he said that the pump timing was 2mm out which is quite a bit aparrently.
Mine still does need a pump overhaul, but I'll wait till I get back from the trip before that is done, he said the Paj is one of the cheaper pumps to overhaul (around $1500 parts and labour) I believe mine is losing a little power due to the pump still, but mainly it's still a bit smokey. (could also be that with all the gear in it now for trips etc it's just too overladen.....)

thanks for the advice. the turbine does spin, but it doesn't free spin by hand (not that I expect it to).
It doesn't blow any smoke (unless under hard labour such being stuck on a hill).
Rob, mine will pull off an idle in the high gears, it's just that it seems to take a lot of throttle to get it to move. checked the economy figures after a trip down the F3 to sydney (from newcastle), got 12.3 ltrs per 100km, at a speed of 110km/hr.
I haven't been doing much driving of late, perhaps I'm expecting to much.

Yeah I'd suppose that's around the figures I'd get, but then mine is tipping the scales at 2.8T and has a tent and spare on racks now along with muds so fuel economy on mine will never be good now.
Mine drinks a bit once it gets over 100, good around the 90km/h mark (although apart from the revs it's hard to keep it slow, it still quite happily sits on 130 on the flat even with all that!)
