Help needed - cutting door interior to install speakers.

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to install some speakers into the front of my car.
I wanna put bigger speakers in the standard locations in the doors,
but I need to cut the hole out.

Can you cut the little rivet welds (see picture) without causing rattles
or that sort of thing??
Anyone done this??

i know it's not really answering your question about the rivet welds, but an alternative is you can put some 6"x9" speakers in the front of your LN106 lux quite easily. you don't even need to cut that much at all. it doesn't rattle at all, but i have been meaning to rip the door trims off and spray some of that sound deadener in there so i can get better resonation.

You will be fine cutting that out.
I dont think it will rattle. If it does just chuck some Sikaflex into the join.
If you want your speakers to sound 100% better (more bass, less distortion) there are two thing you can do.
1. Sound deadener in the door. Spray on or stick on sheets. Best to do whole door but most important is directly behind speaker.
2. Stiffen up the panel the speaker is bolting to. A peice of MDF (or marine ply if you think it will see water ) behind the steel glued and screwed will work.

You will hear the difference.

A car stereo install guy once told me about a course they do.
They have two car doors in the classroom and each has a different speaker and they ask the people to pick which sounds better.
One has a cheap midlle of the range speaker with extensive sound deadening and one has a top dollar speaker with no sound deadening.
Which do you reckon sounds better .

This is actually for my MX83 Cressida daily driver,
but it has solved the problem I am having with my already cut
hilux doors (I have 7"x10" cut into my doors )
They are sweet speakers, but they could be better and I think this
is the way!

For the Cressida I bought Jaycar Response Precision 5" 2 Way splits 50WRMS, they sound pretty good in the store, easily thes best 5" speaker
they had in Jaycar. Only $109.95 too.

Whats sikaflex? is it like silicon or glue or something?
Can I get that from bunnings tonight?
Where do I get the spray on deadener from, do bunnings have that?

And when I glue the piece of MDF behind the steel cutout,
what is the best glue to use for that? Can I use the sikaflex for this?

they are very expensive JL Audio speakers and they have been underwater twice for extended periods of time... you would think i would have learnt the first time but yeah, they still sound sweet as, my whole system is pretty boomin'

Sikaflex is a really strong urathane based glue that looks a bit like really sticky black silicon and can be used to stick anything to anything!
Should be available from a big hardware or auto place.
The spray on deadener can be had in few different varieties.
Cheap bitumin based stuff can be had from auto places like supacheap or better quality stuff can be had from car audio shops.
I think jaycar has the stick on sheet variety too.

When I went to fit bigger speakers I was going to cut the doors but a mate suggested I make some spacers out of wood. Went for that option, covered them with a strip of carpet to look a little better and the speakers thump heaps harder with a solid mount.

Just trace around the speaker, cut the circle out with a jigsaw then work out how thick to make it and draw a circle on the inside.
