Engine wise, go the alloy Rover V8. I'll sell you a bellhousing cheap! They run good on angles too. However, VN/VP V6s are cheap as. Auto is also good to have.

Gearing wise, scrap the 4.7 gear set if you have duals. I realised that fact for the same reasons mentioned by Tony and Adrian.

Cage wise, for a ute, EXO is good. For a wagon, EXO is bad (difficult to brace the B pillar). Since you have a ute, you should EXO and tie it to the frame (like Adrian). Hella strong and not illegal in my neck of the woods.

Sounds sweet, better get cracking if you wanna make it in time!

The lexus sadly will put him above the $1000 BUT the rover will not!
The hilux or rover motors would be the go, as shade tree mechanics can bootie fab them together and get them home. My new rig will have a dedicated trailer, so all the expensive computer management system can be loaded onto a trailer and drive home in a diesel. :finger:

But yeah there is a lot of merits in listening to Tony and Adrian if you want to wheel hard, the options they are choosing are because its cheap and effective.

EXO cages are legal if approved. I have seen thousands of FJ40s with these huge exo cage rollbar roofrack abortions that are full bondo and they never get pulled up.

There is a good exo for those that dont like the look of an exo, the tinbenders did a gen3, and it was sweet (not the green runner) a dark blue machine super sweet cage.

Have i gone mad or is everyone just decided to give the OZZIE v8's on straight gas the big flick :?:
They are tough cheap and readilly available , u can run them with a Quady which has a central float if u want to run dual fuel so they wont flood like other carbs thats y one of the big Yanky companys have copyied the Quadys and claim THESE ARE THE ULTIMATE OFF ROAD CARB.
Please give me your opinions as I expect u all will. :o :o :o

Bubs build what you wont! It would be pretty boring if we all had identical set up trucks.
Yanks dont run Diesels, But they dont have that many diesel vehicals anyway.ie: toyota didnt export diesel hiluxs to the states.99per cent of there vehicals are petrol.
It also comes down to driving style,
theres the giving it some loving, high revs style
and the slow crawl it style.
Personally i like diesel engines, Yes they have to be turboed so they have a bit more punch up high but i love the ability to have the engine crawl over things at 600rpm.I also belive that a diesel engine will rev up quicker than a petrol engine making it more responsive. Then thers the fact they will run at any angle you like.
The down side is they are heavy and dont produce the same sort of power that a petrol engine dose. BUT they will produce a lot more torqe than a petrol engine of the same number of cylinders and displacment.
torqe is what pushes and drives you not power. Put a rotary into a 4wheeler lots of power no torqe, it would be crap. You need torqe.

there are a lot of way to compare engines. hp per litre, torque per kg, etc... but what about bang per buck? you can't beat rover/leyland v8 for that. it's certainly cheap (i just sold mine complete for $400), easily obtainable, easibly repaired, decent power and torque, light weight comparatively, runs on angles, runs at low revs, carbie or efi, petrol or lpg.

Yes further under $10-000 than he was looking at with the first post.

And no an exo cage is not illegal.

Exo cages do not need any approval at all. Otherwise all your ARB side steps and scrub bars would as well. And bj before you ring your engineer mate i have allready checked this with mine.

Yes a Quad can be a good carb but they are very hard to tune and are actually pretty un-reliable.They run ok on angles but you cant beat gas.
The reason a lot of guys have gone of the Aussie grunt is because of the weight factor. If i wasnt concerned about weight i would not go past an EFI holden 5ltr.

Dave,

His original set-up is pretty close to what most guys with a street driven LUX would have!

He has asked for opinions and thats what he got!

I cant see the point in sitting back and letting someone WASTE TIME AND MONEY (he is young and like many of us on a very tight BUDGET) by putting a GUTLESS 2L deisel into a potentially awesome little RIG!

Why not for the same, if not less cost put a old 3.5 V8 in and it would be 100 times better!!! :)

Ok now for my input

Like POS said if its going to be the same cost or even $500 more I`d go the V8 opion without even thinking about it, hell I`m thinking VERY serously about V8ing mine at the end of this year. But I don`t want the V8 for more power when on rocks, I am more then happy with my rig in that area of 4x4ing. I have a small turbo which boosts nice and low in the rev range and when mixed with my 4.8 rockhoppers and 4.8 diffs it is great. What I want a V8 for is the extra power when in the vicy mud and in the faster vicy winch challenge comps, and how can go past the sound of a healthy V8 8)

I also want to put in a 2nd T case, but I will still keep my rockhoppers as well, why? cayse I allready have them. I only want a 2nd T case so that I can have standard low range gearing again when I want it, not for the extra low I will beable to have.

Bubs I have the pertect idea for you. Buy my turboed 2.8 and 5 speed for $3800 and I`ll go the V8 :D But I`m thinking about a chev and straight gas with twin research cabs 8)

Oh and as for the cage, I`d go with the internal. Why? cause I just don`t like the look of external ones, I can see the benefit in them I just don`t like em.

My rig IS going to be getting an internal cage AS soon as $$$$ allows, have allready spoken to Cheezy about it :D

truck $350
1jzgte + auto - cheap, enough go, upgradeable $2000 front cut
dual cases - both 2.28 $1500
adapters $1000
exo $1000
(otherwise youll be building it again with a new cab after the first flop)
arb $1500
spool $300
longs $900
or NAMs portals ($4500)
suspension $2000
harnesses and seats $1000
wheels and tyres $2000
all the stuff you havent got and need and forgot $5000

unless youve got most of the stuff and arent going to pay for labour, a rig of your original description is still gunna run easily over 10K

That rig looks like it should have been left up the back paddock.
