CV conversion Late to Early. Weak to better

Post by sclarke7171 »

This might have been covered but i cant find it.

I have a 94 110 that has the weaker late style CV's.
I want to convert it to the Early Type.

Question i have.
I know the CV is differnet and there is a difference in splines and the Stub axle and pumpkin/swivel is different. I was going to find a 70's front assembly and then fit it all to my housing ect.

But the only catch i have is this.
I have a 6 gear Carrier in the front. Genuine Rover one.
Can i use this or will the splines be diffrent on the axles where they go into the diff center??

Apart from spending a weekend with both diffs apart to find this out, i want to know if i will be able to use my 6 gear carrier.

Your 6-gear carrier should take 1.24" 24 spline inner axles. Old axles (with stronger CV's) usually have weak 1.1" 10 spline inner axles.

Rather than swap the housing, why not buy 2 24/23 spline inner axles from Jacmac or Maxi-Drive - The older stronger (county) CV's are 23 spline at the star (inside). Then for the outer end, you can either make drive flange spacers (10-12mm) or buy some new drive flanges from Maxi-Drive. Good aftermarket axles are A LOT stronger than stock.

There are no real housing differences, old axles had longer (bolt-on) stub axles, and wider hubs with wider bearing spacing.

EDIT - just saw you mentioned a 70's diff. Don't buy one - the rangies have stubless CV's with weak 10 spline outer short axles. The strongest CV's are the AEU2522 CV's fitted to the 110/county from 1984-1992ish

Old rangies are 10 spline at the diff, 23 spline at the CV then have a 10 spline short axle that splines into the CV.
110 county and early defender axles were 10 spline at the diff, 23 spline at the CV and then had a 24 spline stub shaft on the CV.
Your axles are 24 spline at the diff, 32 spline (1") at the CV and have a 24 spline stub shaft on the CV.

OK So what year rangie do i need to find to get Stock bits i need AEU2522 CV's. Then when they break i'll go the Maxi.

Did any Rangie have these CV's??

Finding a County front end wont be cheap. Worse case i'll have to buy the Maxi gear and NEW CV's

No rangies had AEU2522's. The rangie CV's are the same strength as the AEU2522, just the 10 spline stub is weak.

If you fit a stock old front end with 10 spline axles at the diff you will just be breaking diffs or inner axles - probably more often than you would break your 32 spline inners now.

Your only chance in using stock bits is to fins an older rangie/disco that came with a 24 spline diff and use the axles from that. But why bother, Jacmac axles are something like $550 a pair. And non-genuine AEU2522's are pretty cheap - they will break the 24spline outer stub before the CV though, unlike the genuine ones.

EDIT - just read in your sig line you have a 200Tdi - it is remotely possible you already have AEU2522's, but since you have one of the last 200's it is unlikely - have you checked though?

Steve, I know I said on AULRO you should have the wider spaced hubs, but seeing it is such a late model 200Tdi, have you checked they actually are ?
Easiest way is compare to a 300Tdi or Td5 when parked side by side. The longer stub axle ones (200Tdi) have a thicker drive flange. Pretty easy to pick.

[edit] would plugging your VIN into EPC be a reasonably accurate way of determining what bits you already have in the front end ??

Looking at the parts manual it states all Disc rear end fenders have later style CV's also a fella who used to do the work on it in his madness and lack of thought said he thought it was later.....

No drama if it is, i'll just convert it when it breaks....mmmm Next week...

I've had Rangies, used and absed them for 10 years and I haven't never broken a stub axle. Yes, they do break but easy enough to change trackside if they do at the stub end.

I also have a front maxi-drive with the stocko early Rangie 2 piece CV's (up to 88 have these style Cv's) and still haven't broken them yet and that's good for me :D

There's a bloke in the RR club with 32's and the 110 County CV and shattered it on a trip (an easy trip) just lightly negotiating a small incline. I have heard many stories that the 110 County CV is strong but brittle and when they break they shatter

For general off-road, they are fine IMO.
