Help... difficult to change down the gear.

Post by tankekwee1972 »

1999 GU TD42T

I am facing some problems changing the gear down. In my case, its difficult if not almost impossible to change down to 2nd and 1st gear from 3rd upwards unless the speed has been sufficiently reduced. Any ideas anyone?

Double clutch it with a nive rev in between or pull out the box and put new synchros on those gears. Synchros themselves are cheap its just the labour thats not!

Yup.. the double clutching didn't really help but the reving does.

Thought it would be a cheap fix like changing gear box oil or something. Looks like I will have to live with it till it's time to change the clutches and do up the syncromesh at the same time.

Another question ..... will prolong driving of a Lazy Syncro cause damage to the gear box?

Don't discount the "oil" theory just yet. It's worth a go. When ever I've had gearbox problems on the many cars I've owned, I've changed the oil in them to Redline MTL and vastly improved most of the problems. It's a way cheaper attempt to fix than yanking out a Nissan box....
