gearbox problems in hzj75

i have a 1997 hzj75x ute, has a 1hdft factory turbo, problem is i have blown up two gearbox's in 12 months one being fully reco, has anybody got any ideas on what is causing this and what may be done to fix the problem, any help would be much appriciated.

i only use 5th gear when cruising and always use 4th gear for hard work, i like to believe i look after the box.

I'm also curious what part of the gearbox broke? Tobie, are you running the factory stock HZJ75 gearbox or did you upgrade it to the HDJ78/HDJ80 gearbox?

Did you fit a 1HDFT donk from an 80 series?

just a standard 75x ute not a off road 4x4, 2" suspension, 32" muddies, nothing too flash
with the box just a standard 97 75x 5 speed,the front bearing goes and falls apart and kills the input shaft drive gears.

will a 80x box go in ? can a 75x transfer bolt up to the 80x box as i have a pto winch

will a 80x box fit in with the position of the 75x fuel tank??

It should go in with the correct bellhousing and transfer. The petrol FZJ75 has had the similarly sized H151 gearbox since 1993. It will not fit the present transfer. The best option is the gearbox and transfer from an HDJ78/79, but a gearbox and transfer from an 80 should work.

One issue with using an 80 series transfer is the shifter location. I *think* it will go into the cab near or under the front 2/3 seat.

Another issue is the full time 4WD (GX, Sahara 80) vs. part time 4WD (Std. 80). Anyone have any input on running fulltime 4WD on the 75 series? Front CV joint/drive plate wear may be a problem like in the early full time 80 series.

I have an 80s full time G'box if you are interested that was behind a factory fitted 1Hd-t. We bought the car rolled for other bits and peices...ie suspension and chassis mounts, etc. Didn't need the box so it comes with bell housing, flywheel and clutch assembly (used but ok).

There is also a kit available to take out the full time 4wd for a couple of hundred dollars.

The problems you may encounter are: sticks coming up at the wrong place; you will need to fit an electronic switch to engagae the front diff when in high range; gearbox may hit the fuel tank (small body lift may help); tailshaft lengths may differ (longer front and shorter rear may be needed);

I'm planning to do the same gearbox swap into my HJ75. Is there a definite interference between the gearbox and the fuel tank? How is it avoided in the petrol FZJ75?

To be honest... not sure. I didn't get a chance over the weekend to measure and have a decenty look. I did quickly look under a 75 and did notice that the fuel tank is close to where the tailshaft runs. But to whether or not there will be any interferance I am not sure. You will have to measure the length of the 80s box and compare the length of the 75s box and see where it finishes. It will be close but not sure how close...
