I saw a base model white 80 Series (barn door) for sale at a local 4x4 yard a few years ago. The previous owner had put a heap of GXL stuff in it.
GLX front and rear seats, centre console, dash (with tacho, oil & volt gauges), roof console etc. So it must be possible, it all looked neat and factory like to me.

Gday
At the beginning of the 80 series, was the standard, then came an upgaded model of it called the dx...it had tacho, cloth seats, but still 6 seater, single rear seat....some time later, the std was deleted and the dx kept (at thesame time Nissan deleted the std gq and made their dx a base model)
Then somewhere along the way, the dx was made back into a poverty pack with the option to upgrade.....all these have barn doors...
The dash you use needs to come from the spercific model you have, gxl dashes change from cable to electronic spedo 8/92, then wiring changes in 1/95...so be aware of that!

80s dash

Post by Grasshopper »

I had an 80s poverty pack. After 12yrs with no tacho etc decided to put in a GXL dash. The problems were,No oil pressure sender unit on the block. The tacho will not work due to a different injection pump body ie you cannot just fit a tacho sender to your pump. The wires are not in the roof for the fuel gauge and need to be installed etc.The tacho I understand can be made to work off the alternator and then calibrated.

Its all possible.....you dont need to fit the roof in if you dont want...the 100 uses one gauge and two tanks...an 80 can be wired that way too....the biggest problem is the tacho sensor on the pump and getting the right dash.
Best to get a DX off the bat, or an upgrade...what ever they are called, or were called....plenty about...then you have it all.

retrofitting the roof console is diffcult (near impossible) on post-95 DX's as they went to a moulded head lining that does not suit the profile of the overhead console - but yes you can wire up the gauge cluster such that when the sub tank is selected, the gauge reads the level of the sub, and vice-versa. the pump mod for the tach sensor is fiddly and annoying since it requires the removal of the pump from the engine, and drilling and tapping the pump body. easier to get a GXL or 75 series fuel pump, or have it doen by a shop when you get your pump overhauled and the aneroid fitted for your turbo :)

Sounds like it would be easier to buy a gxl and stick barn doors on it.............................

yes I thought that too, but the entire rear of the body is different - essentially you have to chop the whole sill/jamb off a std/dx and weld it on the back of a GXL, and you'd have to be a bodywork genius for it to look any good.

it's more that 80's often have crap drivers who try to drive their very truck-style gearbox like a car gearbox. If you go to a thinner, syntheirc oil it will shift better - and/or learn to double shuffle, up and down. slower, but won't fill your gearbox with brass filings so it all lasts longer.

I had the same problem with my 80 series g/box when I first got it. Worn syncro's is the problem. My cruiser has the tacho and sub fuel gauge on the roof, so I'm assuming that its a DX (1993 model), I've just always refered to it as a standard
