the best oil/ grease

can anyone tell me the best lube to use in a warn winch. i brought a sec hand one thats done no work and was going to pull it down and clean and grease it but i dont think your suppose to use grease ?

so can anyone tell me the best stuff to use. also do i need a seal kit to do this

O by the way its a WARN md 8000 lbs low mount

Warn highmounts use oil. The lowmounts use grease.

To quote my Warn Operator's Manual -
No internal lubrication by the owner is needed for the life of the winch.
Winch should not be submerged in water. If winch is accidently submerged, it should be operated within 3 days until motor is warm to the touch. This should drive out any moisture that has entered the motor. - end of quote

Despite what Warn say, they will get water into the gears, which causes rusting of the gear teeth and jounals etc. so need cleaning and re-greasing regularly if you do water crossings.

Do not use too much grease as this cause undue load as the gears have to pump the grease around. Give everything in the gearcase a liberal coating of grease at re-assembly - do not pack extra gease into the cavities after assembly.

As for grease look for a longlife grease that states water resistance (or the like). Someone else might have some better recomendations.

I use Mercury Quicksilver waterproof grease on my outboard. Specified for trailer wheel bearings plus artculation points etc. Fantastic stuff in the wet. Could be worth considering. Buy it from your local marine shop
