another cb question
so i just wired up my cb that I bought off ebay....a uniden pro500 and ive got it connected to an aerial, and the two wires are wired up correctly. now the unit switches on and the numbers are displayed on the screen, but the thing won't make any noise, even when I twiddle with the squelch and everything.
so i went out an bought an external speaker from jaycar for like $15 just to see if when I hooked that up and talked, the noise would come out that speaker, but that doesnt work either.
my aerial is on my bumber bar. now ive mounted the mount underneath the bumper, so that the screw pin sticks up through a hole, and the aerial screws onto it from there. now if you get what i mean, it means that the aerial is between a piece of metal before it actually touches the aerial base...would that effect the radio at all? I just dont know what the hell is wrong with the radio and its pissing me off, and if i bought some dodgey shit off ebay i will kill the guy i bought it off. someone please do you have any ideas of what the problem may be?!?! thanks

cb tips
i'm not sure whether you mean UHF or 27mhz when you say cb. but either types should receive some kind of noise even static when turned on if the set is in good order regardless of the state of your antenna set up.
you need to start eliminating things. first ensure that your antenna cable is in good order, (did it come new with the set?). The way that you described the mounting is perfectly normal, and it is good to make sure that there is a good metal to metal contact between the mounting base and the vehicle. this is so that the signal can get a ground plane. i find when mounting antennas that i get far better results if i mount them higher on the vehicle, and not on the bumper bar as it is better for the whip part of the arial to be above the ground plane (ie. the mass of your car)
if the antenna and coax connections are all good, then make sure that your unit is transmitting. transmit and have a friend or another unit nearby and see if you can hear the transmission on another unit.
if you are transmitting then obviously your antenna is fine, and perhaps either (a) your output from the receiver in the unit has a break in it some where before both the internal speaker and the jack connections or (b) the units receiver is lunched.
the only way to know for sure is to take it away and have it bench tested by a professional. this will cost you less if you take it out of the vehicle first so they don't have to charge you for taking it out
hope this helps

Thanks mate, I think I'm gonna have to take it to somewhere, which is a pain really because the unit only cost me $40 and I'm going to have to pay the radio place $27.50 just to look at it, and I don't want to pay some guy $27.50 just for him to turn around and say its farked.
It's a 27mhz cb by the way.

If you haven't got the manual have a look here.
