Tacho connections on 80LC
Anybody out there knows how to connect a petrol 80 series tacho to a 1HZ motor?
The car had a 3F and has been transplanted with a 1Hz, the only thing
I can´t get to work is the tacho.

You need to ensure the the injection pump has the pulse sender ( DX 80's had no tach sender on the pump ) if the pump has the pulse sender you need to connect the pulse wire directly to the P (pulse) terminal on the 1HZ 80 tacho. You would need to check but i would say that the wire that conected to the - terninal on the old 3F coil that goes back into the wiring loom should go to pulse terminal on tha tacho. From memory the tacho's are interchangable in the instrument cluster so it should work.

\\udm wrote:Yes Wally, the pump has the pickup sensor wires, it has 2 wires, do you think 1 wire has to be earthed or a connected +12v source, and the other 1 to the tacho wire?
One wire will be IGN (+12v) and the other is the pulse wire to 1hz tacho not sure which one would have to check wire colours in manual but not today . Can find out if more info required. Manual is in shed and its now pissing rain, colds and warm in the house ( Been outside in the cold all night competing in the Navnites comp 250 km from home and missed out making it home by 500mtrs when the noisey diff shit its self dragging a XR6 Turbo at the lights.

Andrew, what book is it you have?, I don´t know what else to try (i´ve tried doing what the other guys have suggested, but it doesn´t work), it is a bit frustrating, I am ABLE to change an engine, DO all the electricals, hoses, blablabla, and I CAN´T get a simple tacho to work.
PS. You´re changing oils... try not to do it on the driveway. lol

I have an 80 diesel tach if you need it, make a reasonable offer. The two wires on the tach sensor go to EARTH and to the sensor. The Brown wire goes to earth (NOT +12V!!) and the black/red wire goes to the tach signal terminal. I think it probably doesn't really matter which is which since the tach sensor is just a little coil.
I think the petrol tach is unlikely to work since it uses the 12v pulse off the coil? the pulse from the 1HZ will be (a) the wrong frequency (b) far too weak. you could potentially build a fairlyu inepensive amplifier/modulator circuit but I think getting the right tach will be cheaper and easier.
cheers
