I've voted other. After having owned a Vitara and braking countless CV's in it i'll lean towards over engineer it.
As LJ said, ikf you like dishing out the hate, get bigger diffs.
There are many circumstances where the additional 10-15mm clearance of a Zook diff will help but with the way i drive i'd rather have more strength.
If driven accordingly the zook diffs should be OK. The unfortunate reality is that most people can't refrain from thrashing their cars once in a while.
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
Reason being, I am doing the diff conversion to toys right now. For 2 years I ran 31's locked on stock stuff and didn't break once. But I felt it was time for total change/upgrade/buildup/project. I wanted to get more height but didn't wanna end up with a tippy vehicle, so i went wider as well. And to acheive this toy diffs were the clearest answer for me and i happened to get some at the right time for a reasonable price
i want toy diffs. I wish suzuki had a diff setup that could take 35's comfortably becuase if they did, i would get it. But i dont think they do. In my opinion, the 4x4 is a truck, and if you can make that truck tuffer, while still having it look like a toy truck then why not??? Plus i hate fixing something in my car repeatedly. Once its done, i dont want to touch it.
Ive had both shaved lux and shaved zook diffs I also took my zook diffs a lot of places. Id have to say zook diffs are better for some ppl.(not for me though as i can't hold lux cv together) the clearance is heaps better and yes they are lighter. I know they are the lowest part of the car but they are also unsprung. A lighter unsprung car will out perform a heavy one at speeds any day. As I know not all o/l members are into slow rockcrawling and hardcore stuff, instead some of us rally and do gymcarnas. My 2 cents Rhett
From my experiences with a Jeep CJ5, which is a compairable vehicle to a swb zook, first with stock diffs and later on with diffs from a Scout 800 that were about 12 cm wider but the same strength, I´d go for the added stability of wider diffs any time.
And if the wider diffs are stronger as well, so much the better.
However, in my own, personal, humble opinion; for a zook, I´d say that any tire over 31" would call for a bigger engine than a puny 1 or 1.3 litre.
I wouldn´t settle for anything less than 2 litres and that, along with bigger tires automatically calls for stronger diffs.
I do know how hard and overheating it can be for even a 4.2 litre six to turn downaired 33x12.5s in dry sand or wet, heavy, sticky snow.
But like so many of you have said: horses for courses; why change a setup you´re happy with?
Ingthorsson.
if you don´t know its impossible, you just might do it!
i'd prefer bigger stronger diffs (i have lux diffs in the shed) just so i can go bigger rubber , but its not just the price of the diffs its the extending the chassis , lowering ratios even more , new rims tyres , lockers etc , new steering components , i have yet to break anything on 31's and thats why my lux diffs sit in the shed till the need arises (enough that i can justify the $$ to do it ) .
ive competed at nissan trials last year broke nothing , (but stuffed eng slightly , dam water) and i would of had to had the smallest diffs or = to it and i finished mid field ahead of bigger diffed zooks , so you can still be competitive (in a fun sense not expecting to win or anything ) in a standard diffed zook
but if money was no object the bigger diffs i would go
if its worth doing do it intensly , better still do it with MADPASSION
