no damage worries there,they don't drive real nice at all without the rear but if the front drive shaft is off it drives fine.you will notice a little more backlash though.

Carry circlip pliers and 2 lts of gear oil. Pull the axles and flanges, then detach flanges and replace them with the caps.
Remove the tailshaft then all is good with minimal loss of oil.
1986 was the change from oil fed bearings to grease(could be wrong) but you can pull the seal from the hub/stub axle in the later ones to run them on oil.

yep, its a very common mod. Use an RTC3511 hub seal.
No more drive shaft/drive flange spline wear, and no more need to adjust the wheel bearings every 6-12 months.
