They look like a waste of money to me. Look at the big sections of tread without anything - going downhill your brakes would lock up every revolution.

why not hire snow chains for the 1 week per yr you use them?

I have snow chains. Only used them once, but not on snow. Make a mess of tracks, so only used them as a last resort.
