Which Intercooler for GQ?

Hi all,

I'm looking to fit an intercooler to an existing aftermarket turbo kit (not sure what brand was fitted when I brought the truck).

I want a cheap intercooler and thought some of the nissan skyline etc intercooler mught fit (cheap on Ebay), do we need a specific core size etc.

Does anybody have any thoughts on what type?
Top mount or front mount?
What is involved in fitting?

awill4x4 is a bit of a guru on them, he makes the things, but doesnt deal with crap, only quality.

Get one off the new pathfinder, small and cheap. Becoming popular in the comp scene so i hear. Only $350 or so from memory from nissan

I do know OnTrack in East Kielor Melb are getting some very good look coolers in. Very big though and I cant see the grill staying.
Also the XR6T intercoolers are supposed to be pretty good.

I have top mount from and MU or 2003 Jackeroo. Large and very easy to install. just need some bits of flat bar for mounts, one donut to cut and make 2 bends from and a small peice of silicone hose. All up about $120 of materials to fit the IC.

I'm from Gippsland - Traralgon way! But can travel to Melbourne.
Probably go for a topmount - cleaner, easier and cheaper as far as I can tell.

That sounds good...where did you get your IC from?
Do you find an increase in performance with the IC? or any difference?

I'm from Gippsland - Traralgon way! But can travel to Melbourne. Probably go for a topmount - cleaner, easier and cheaper as far as I can tell.

If your going to all the trouble of going with an IC, do it right, go for whats best, or IMWO it becomes a bit of a waste of effort as you will not get the benefits you expect, then will wanna go better. if you do the last effort becomes a waste of bucks.

Im in the process of fitting a front mount in my MQ.

Need to weld up tanks yet and do piping.

the only thing I dont like about front mounts, if your in an accident on the road, they are one of the first things to get damaged.

I here this one come up alot. So far I have not seen one damged enough to totally destroy it.
At the recent ATECO challenge a competitor in a Black GQ cut down wagon with a turbo petrol engine, with a full width front mount cooler. Drove into a tree and hit it almost dead center of the bullbar. The impact was hard enough to Bend the centre section of a Modified cheezy bar.
It bent the bar, alloy fairlead, broke mounting tabs of winch, pushed intercooler and radiator into engine fan. So there was a bit of damage. The next morning they where competing again and the only things replaced where the winchbar, winch. The radiator support panel was heated with an oxy and bashed with a hammer. The radiator was straigthened.
But there was no damage to the radiator.

Birdy also runs a big front mount and althougth the intercooler has had a couple of holes filled up it is still going and it is pretty old. Been on a coulpe of different cars done more comps than you can poke a stick at and still works.

Also if the intercooler is damaged just carry a smallish crossover pipe. so when it does get damaged beyond repair just disconnect.

You need to duct it so that all air is drawn through both cooler and radiator before it goes elsewhere like a tunnel. I might put mesh over it but as fair as stone chips and the like, it'll only bend the core a bit. I suppose a water spray could be set up for cleaning and cooling if playing in mud as well.

I have a Subaru WRX 'cooler on my Surf. Even for a 6 cyl, it should be fine, as these are well known for high flow & efficiency, more so than the Skyline cooler. Just be sure to get one from a '98 onwards model, as these have twin inlets, unlike older models.

Ring BGT Performance (phone operator will find 'em) Evolution R, Bresciani Racing, or any ricer shops. Should have some kicking around after doing front mounts on WRX's. Bought one for $100.

Another good one is a Mazda RX-7 Series 4 cooler.

Intercooling will make a noticeable difference, particularly with torque.

I am in the process of fitting a water-air intercooler from a 1990s Subaru Liberty/Legacy. Cost $350 + shipping from Sydney (SSS Automotive). All inlet plumbing currently done so just waiting for me to fit the pump and little radiator at the front. One of the main reasons I went down this path is that I should be able to use the radiator loop along with a marine oil cooler to cool the hydraulic oil in my winch circuit.

I'm probly going with a top mount on my ute. After seeing the type of crap that my radiator catches after a weekend of playing, there's NO WAY i'd use a front mount (maybe on the touring wagon, but not the ute). I reckon get a cheapish bonnet scoop (not a Hornet drag racer/bird catcher type one), just a smallish one, and maybe an XR6T size cooler or similar. That'll do the trick. I reckon the XR6T ones are the sh!t if you want a half good quality one, cheap. They're not too common though.

Top mount IC is the way I will be going - suits my applications.
Have been told the Nissan Pulsar GTi-R IC would work well.
Anybody know where one is - off the top of their head?

eBay eBay eBay. Thats your best bet. Anywhere from $25-$70. Most get tested for leaks before going up for auction too.
