I am after some information on the SWB patrols/mavericks.
When did they start and stop being produced?
Are any of the petrol engines EFI?
I know there are other threads on economy, but what should i expect out of the diesel patrol? Also, what about economy of gas?
I notice alot are on gas, is this a bad thing?
What about the safari imports. They seem expensive and all 88/89 models. Are they worth it?
Is there a year model which is generally considered better?

Questions about SWB patrol/maverick models?

i'll answer as many questions as i can for ya champ.
think they started about 88 and stopped about 98. don't hold me to that though.
i'm sure some of them are efi but in the newer models though.
i have a 89 gq diesel and with 33" tyres i get approx 600k's to a tank around town and about 700 on the open road.
not sure about gas but they put them on gas cause you've got approx 2.7 tonnes GVM being pushed by a petrol engine, ends up being thirsty. so gas is the cheaper alternative.
the safari version ain't worth it, the only difference is that the roofs are higher than a standard gq. too much stuffing around to import one.
as for year model, it doesn't really matter. its a nissan. the only difference is that through the years the technology has gotten better. the only difference is the price tag.
i paid $11-000 for mine 2 years ago in immaculate condition, diesel with approx 220-000k's on it. with air, steer and about 7 months rego.

First build dates start at 87 thru to 95 for teh SWB and 98 for the LWB.
Jap imports are the same thing except for the 24v elecs which make things a little different but no big problem.
Mechanical they are all pretty much the same.
Only differance are, pretty much diff gears which in the 4.2lt engines (SWB's only came with these) where 3.9 or 4.1. There is a panel on the fire wall that will have either HG42 or HG39, this will tell you the diff ratio.

upto I think 93 they had better pistons so could take more boost. But still a late model is good for 12psi boost.
Also there where SWB with EFI. I deffinatly know of one. But a none EFI can be converted with a new head and efi ecu stuff. Or do a conversation using Falcon EFI gear like Bru did.

you dont need to change head to do EFI.

i have a 92 model, the last of the australia swb's i think. Im runnin strait petrol and i have a fresh motor in mine. It hammers. Dont bother with fuel injection if you have a gud fresh motor, they go alrite, onli do it if u wanna turbo? The diesel swb's are rare as hens teeth and go for a arm nd a leg. The imports r a gud idea cause i see alot of old blokes who luv the shorty get a late model one and that is there touring machine for there retirement, too expensive though. If you are doin hardcore stuff, budget in for a extended whell base converison.
