How wide is the chassis (inside) on a Sierra, ie how much clearance between the rails? The DOHC EJs are pretty damn wide, while the SOHC ones are only damn wide.

I'm sure you could do it (if the crossmember didn't get in the way) but you'd need to make just about everything yourself (like an adaptor, flywheel etc) then a crossmember to suit. Sure it's possible, and they're really torquey motors too so it would be a good conversion.

Even better you could pipe the turbo to sit in front of the engine where there's more room.

As for using an AWD gearbox with it . . . Nup. Not possible and I dare say not a good option.

What about an FJ20DET or an SR20DE? Might be a little more straight forward.

The Subaru Expert's opinion: Possible, not easy, not cheap.

i have a spare sierra chassis and my dd is an impreza, hmm time to get out the grinder.

seriously though one of my mates is considering this idea. I thought one of the usa buggys, (maybe team carnage but i can't remember who) had a 2.5 subaru efi engine in their buggy. I don't know what gear box they adapted to it but if you've got the time and will power then its possible.

There's also a mob un in Queensland called VolksConversions who specialise in Dak-Dak engines into anything, but also spectialise in any engine into a Dak-Dak. I used a VolksConversions adaptor to bolt an EJ engine to an EA box (it was terrible quality though).

But as we all know there's a hell of a lot more to a conversion than getting the bitch to bolt to the bellhousing; in my opinion that's the easy part. Things like flywheels and clutches tend to get expensive and also people just don't know what they want or need to do the job.

You could probly use the dual range box if it bolts to that series motor,

Only using the rear output and run zook transfer , Probly have to make up a set ov cover plates for the front out puts on the box,

The 4WD boxes aren't strong enough to transmit all the power to the rear output.

A couple of Subaru nuts in the 'States are running divorced Nissan T-cases behind their 4WD gearboxes, using a front differential, however gearbox failure after a few months is common.

I am going to run a WRX motor in my new buggy,I originally thought of using the STI auto (cause i got it with the front cut)
I have spoken with TONY RIGOLI in sydney (subaru guru)
He said yes you can modify the all wheel drive auto to just drive the rear output shaft.
Basically pull apart the front diff so it does not drive and then you need to either machine up a lock for the rear output drive or weld it up.But it can be done,as far he says anyway...

No mention of longevity, that 'box is bred for the dyno, not 100:1 crawl ratios and 35" tires at 6psi! Guys in the US are busting gearboxes with normally aspirated EA82s.

If you tell me how wide the engine bay on a Sierra is I can tell you if an EJ20 will fit.

yeah good point, but surely you could fit a boxer in there? i wonder how much a 3.8 dunnydonk weighs, i think the ej20 is about 130-150kg dry (is that heavy for a 2.0 4cyl? its a lot heavier than my f10a. how about a honda goldwing engine? flat 6, 1800 heh im just being silly now.

[Edit: 1800 goldwing (the new model) puts out about 115hp and 125lb/ft torque which makes my f10 (44hp, 55lb/ft) look a bit Grimace. slightly oversquare with a 6000rpm redline...]

Another interesing angle would be a VW water cooled boxer out of a pre fwd Combi. Might be easier to get gearboxes to bolt up. Good power, but more importantly great low down torque. (a few of the old Subie guys had them on the horizon at one time.)
