Hey Everyone, I'm sure this question has probably been asked a thousand times in the past but without searching thru the huge log of posts it's easier to ask once again,
Im looking at purchasing an 80 series in the very near future, is there a big fuel economy difference between petrol / diesel / turbo diesel with a 4 or so inch lift an 35's?
Who reccomends what? Petrol / Diesel / Pre / Post 1995?
Any comments are greatly appreciated on all aspects of an 80 that I should be know of before purchasing...

Ide go for a post 95 Turbo diesel with the 1HDFT
4.5L Petrol = friggin hungry!!!!! not alot of low end torque (obviously not like a diesel anyway)
4.2L Diesel = Top motor, though no performer (i.e Slug), the most we get out of the fraser island cruiser (92 pov pack) is 120km/h (it takes for ever to get there from 100km/h) thats with the tinny on the back and the car loaded with gear with extractors and 2.5" exhaust.
4.2L TDi (pre 95, 1HDT) = personally would never touch again after the amount of sh!t mum's has put us through.
4.2L TDi (Post 95, 1HDFT) = i personlly think u couldnt go wrong, friends had a 97 40th Anniversary with this motor bolted to the 4sp Auto, once made a few adjustments to the fuel pump and had it Dyno tuned, pulled like a stock horse and hauled arse!!!!!!!!!!! and no worries having to change gears in the sand (gotta love the Auto ).
At the end of the day u gotta ask yourself what are you going to use the car for, and what do you want the car to do for you!

No apology needed, there is a wealth of information already discussed on this forum and I know there's a lot of 80 info as I just bought one myself and did all the searching a few weeks ago.
I bought a 94 GXL factory turbo diesel. That's the 1HDT, would have liked to get a 1hdft multi valve but couldn't find the additional $5k - $10k + . Reports of 1hdt getting 12 litres per 100 km's pretty much match mine on the highway and seems to have plenty of power. Time will tell.

the 1HD-T is an excellent motor and your experience with it is limited and certainly not typical. There are problems with early examples shedding big end bearings (the repair cost is astronomical) but with aftermarket bearings and regular oil changes these motors are very strong and will last a long time (500kkm+). all that said you should consider a factory 4.2 1HZ motor with aftermarket turbo - more driveable and more powerful than the factroy turbos, at the expense of a slight loss of economy.
in stock as a rock form, fuel economy in the petrol 4.5 efi around 18 - 20 litres/100km, around 10 - 12 in any of the diesels, all very much dependant on how you drive. big lift and big tyres kills economy. My 1996 multivalve turbo diesel uses about 12litres/100km and has 5" lift, 35" tyres and I drive it fairly hard most of the time.

Sounds like everyone thinks the diesel is the only choice then, the petrol power and response would be good, but nothing beats the economy of a diesel std, std turbo or aftermarket turbo, especially once i bolt on the 35's and a lift, plus all the weight of steel bull bars, rear bars, drawers, roof racks etc etc...
Unless the boss gives me a fuel card for work... then bring on the guzzling petrol!
Now all I gotta do is find a good example in perth, hopefully with some mods done already!

But for us every 5000km's shes in for a service, though we spend most of the time playing wheely-bins waiting for a tow truck to take the p.o.s to the mechanic. we are there that often that the mechanic doesnt put our name down when we book it in to get fixed, he books it under "The Car From Hell". we're now at the stage where we dont trust it on long trips, So the end of the year mum and dad are trading it for a 100!

If you take it to the mechanic that often I would have sold it yonks ago, I can never trust a car once its broken down a few times, always feel like its gonna break down again at the worst possible time...

I recently sold my 93 Petrol RV 80 Series cruiser and I couldn't fault that big 4.5 litre petrol 6. If anyone wants to whinge <flame suit on> about it being thirsty then try maintaining good fuel economy with a V8 and see how far you get. <\flame suit off>

I've got a 93 deisel, and i still think its not great on fuel, let alone if it were turbo'd.. Tho turbo'ing the engine is on my to-do list, when i bought the car, i had a budget, and i thought to myself, it would be nice to be turbo'd but there are so many other things i should do to it first, becuase remember, the turbo is an enhancement, which doesnt realy allow you to do anything that a non-turbo cant do, but slower.. Instead i spent the mony on a bullbar, winch, sliders, new tires and rims, snorkel, lift and driving lights.. Money well spent.. Sometimes it can be a slug, espessially if your towing, but its not that bad .. i dragged a torago once and won!

a turbo increases the efficiency of an engine, its just that normally people abuse the extra power which ends up using mopre fuel. If you drive a turbo diesel with controlled acceleration they should use less fuel than if it were turbo'd
a 93 will have a 1hz which should get about 12-13L/100Km

Woolworths have just started a new deal with visa so if you buy fuel at woolworths/caltex with a wollworths fuel voucher and pay with ANY visa card you get 8 cents/litre off - saves $10 per fill in the 80 - better than a kick in the teeth!

My 80 GXL has the 1HDT (Nov 91') bought it with 150,000K's now has over 270,000, was not regularly serviced but had major service's recorded, since I have owned it & have it serviced every 10,000 I have never had one ounce of trouble with this entire car. for the first 5 years it was totally stock while I paid it off, now its getting the attention it deserves.

i am in the same boat as WANNA was searching for an 80 and the cheapest you can get them over here is $8750 and that is with 480k on the clock. I was looking at an 80 series extra cab out of brisbane but the way the D.P.I. is over here it would have cost near on 5k just to get it repaired for registration. What is the going price of an 80S in the east??

Post number 1. G'day all - I am a bit a petrol fan now after many years of being a diesel die hard.
My last 80 series was a '93 version which i gave to the old man and he is now towing a van around oz with it. Without a doubt the best car/4by I've ever owned and if the old boy gets sick of it i'll probably take it back. Currently got a sr5 3.4 auto lux - lifted and locked for touring and stuff - not a hard core beast, but great for towing boats up the beach at Fraser.
The 4.5 petrol has seen out issues with crap diesel sellers, dead fuel pumps from low sulfur fuel, replaced turbos, 5000k services,not to mention how many diesels it has pulled out of the sand......Yes it drinks a bit more, but as 4wd monthly recently worked out you've gotta do more than 400 000 kms in a diesel tojo before it breaks even with owning a petrol. Final point is that you can buy a brand new 4500 motor from toyota cheaper than a rebuild on a diesel (about $7k). Still love the diesels too, just can't make the numbers stack up.
