rav4 in sand?

rav4 in sand?
Looking at one of these (5dr wagon),I know they don't have low range and large diameter tyres(?). Does the low weight help things in the soft stuff,nothing hardcore, only 'light' beach work with a dune entry.
Just intersted in people's experience.

For the cost of a Rav, why not look at a a sierra/vitara/feroza? They got low range and there's a lot more aftermarket around. Any 4by can drive on a beach but it's all about the option of being able to go a little bit more off road if you want to too. i personally have a dislike for this vehicles, living in brisbane city there's too many wanky metro urban city types who actually think these "4wd's" are tough. Them and the coffee shop wranglers... My two cents and whinge anyway.
Have been going to Inskip for Christmas the last couple of years, we had no drama on the beach at all. They would be better if they had low range.
But last year we went over to fraser Up the beach, inland.Even had to go over a dune to get back to the beach, A rodeo just made it. A 4 runner did it easy, & turbo diesel Jackaroo got stuck, & the rav made it the easiest. It really suprised me. But thats only my view on them. if you use your head you should stay out of trouble. I thought it would struggle but all was good

buddy i think they are a good car for the citty would not catch me in one but hey thats just me i have seen brand new pajero and nissan wagons stuck in the easy bits if you want one get one but just think of the ground clearance beafore you do it veary easy to fall into a deap rut and get stuck not fun if you are not trying to do on purpose

I agree with Duff. Mates mum has one and he drives it passed bogged cruisers and alike vehicles all the time up at DIP and Fraser. Definately depends a bit on the driver though, i don't think he has ever owned a 2wd vehicle.

Our friends have the latest Rav4 Cruiser, in an Auto, and as long as u have momentum it goes all over fraser, flies past bogged troopies (lol though they are mostly tourists ) and other vehicles stuck on Indian Head, the only place it will get bogged is the bypass track for Ngkala Rocks. Then again if there are no cars bogged, going slow or comming head on we usually can get through if we have a run up and maintain speed. The moment we have to stop, is the moment she wont go again because Deep Ruts + Soft Sand (like talcum powder) x 4 deflated tyres = bellied out and stuck as stuck can be!!!!!! The Auto helps alot in the sand as you dont have to work the little clutch too hard. Also With the little motor if it starts dying with a Man in the soft stuff the second you have to hit the clutch to change down is the second you could become buggered! The Auto keeps the wheels turning nicely (again as long as you have momentum). So if your gonna buy one there is probly gonna be people who disagree but if your just gonna use it for the occasional beach trip ide no doubtably go for an Auto!!!!!!!!

I agree with Troy however if you were doing trips to Fraser it would be a good idea to get a tranny cooler hooked up

Yeah it needs a Tranny cooler bad, after working the little auto hard in the soft stuff (in summer) at times you can smell it getting hot. but they havnt had any trouble with it besides that, temperature guage has never climbed over half way, so the only prob is how hot tha auto gets, but that will be fixed b4 they take it next time.
