TB42 clicking noise - not tappets ??

Same as TD42 thread - single rattle / clicking with engine speed and when engine at operating temp - tappets adjusted correctly and in good condidtion.

I'm hoping that it's related to the air compressor (new), power steering pump (new), water pump (new) or alternator.

Maybe fuel pump (not is use as motor is dedicated gas) ?

Can you tell which side of the engine it is coming from? Leaking exhust manifold has been know to cause a ticking sound.

Mine does the same , Im pretty sure its something to do with the slack adjuster on the timing chain. Mine goes quiet when reving above 1500 revs. Im not to bothered about it , Im sure the chain will out last the engine.

I thought it might have been timing chain related. There is no performance loss and it's definately not the exhaust. Was hoping it wasn't cam / lifter related.

Thanks - I guess I'll just live with the ticking.

Could be the camshaft bearings. A mate rebuilt his motor beacuse it had a similar noise. still didnt fix it, ended up being the cam bearings

Mine has an irregular lite ticking noise, it has been diagnosed as being worn/flat spotted lifters.
They may have stuck at some stage in Japan through poor servicing and worn in one spot.
As they are now free and well lubed they slowly rotate as they should and when they reach the flat spot, the rocker gets a little extra clearence for a short while.
I reduced the Tappet/valve clearences a bit and run heaps of moreys oil stabiliser and it shut it up some more.
It has new rockers and shaft and injectors.

The noise goes away at about 1100 to 1500 rpm
I could pull the head off but its not worth it.

is it only at certain revs? mine did it (4.5ltr gu) was exhaust manifold slight leak at gasket , fixed it than acouple weeks later noise was back but this time not as bad it was one of the hitension leads arching , sounds excactly like tappets new plug and lead all good , only very slight noise (standard )from tappets

Hey Mav - nice XW.

My car didn't have any air fitted - even though it's an xlt model. The complete a/c cost around $1200. I guess the sanden a/c compressors are 400-500. Mine is a little noisy when it engages. I'm waiting for it to get worse before I complain.


Also re rocker gear - I've been told that TB motors were renowned for poor rocker shaft wear. The trick is to set the tappets and then run the motor (with the cover off) and slide a thinner feeler gauge under each tappet. If the noise goes away - that is the culprit. Adjust that tappet a little closer and repeat the test. I'll try this soon.

Try the fuel pump.
I recently had the petrol tank removed on my duel fuel GQ and after a few days it developed a similar rattle that was hard to pinpoint. The noise was found using a automotive stethiscope placed on the fuel pump housing, the same noise could be felt with hand contact. You could probably check the fuel pump further by simply connecting a length of hose to the inlet and outlet side and supply fuel to the pump to lubricate it and place it under load to check if it is the problem.

Hey guys.

I'm still chasing this ticking noise.

I've now been advised (by a head shop) that it's most likely the cam followers. Has anyone else come across this advice.
