hey all,
i am looking at buying an older model rangie and cutting it down to a 2 door, then build a tray for it. ive done a bit of a search on here but cant really find much about this.
has anyone done this themselves? if so do you have any pics you could send me?

If your looking for a four door bobbed into a two door then made into a ute! Try looking at Les Richmonds(Andrew Richmonds) old Project Car.

im doin a 2 door into a flat bed at the moment.. have a look at my pics if you like @ http://community.webshots.com/user/tcpr_024 .im up to building my tray at the moment......havent put any recent pics up though...i had a look at alot of other utes eg patrols and cruisers to see how they did their setups. but i have decide to run the main fram of my flat bed into the frame i have built into the rear cab wall...hope it works! just for strength. email loan rangie..he has some great pics of his ute...

i think a two door would be easier..i think a 4 door is only 8cm longer than a two door but i may be wrong...im actually going to use a sheet of aluminium for the part under the window. just rivet it to the frame and do some fibre glassing along the edges...i wanted to keep the original back window so i could still open it!

That way you can use the rear window. The lower section is harder to get looking right for a 4 door.
For the 2 door just cut where the new c pillar joins and make a new rear wall out of SHS or similar and then cover in sheet.
This is the way a friend did his, it looks good and is strong.

I have a 2 door Rangie bobtailed ute I want to sell in the next couple of weeks. Ute conversion done by the Haultech boys. I live at Logan Village Qld and I am asking for $2000. It has a 4 speed manual and 3.5L carbie engine and will be sold as is. I think it is a 76 model or something like that.

did you guys that have done the ute/tray conversions on your rangies have any probs with getting engineers certificates or roadworthys?
i was actually thinking a 2 door would be easier and better looking for a cut-down than a 4 door. i will be building an inner-support frame for the rear of the cab where i cut so i dont think strength will be an issue-probably similar to the way Daves3 has suggested.

For the boys in WA, I will be building a Hybrid soon but before I even considered it I went to the licensing centre inspection pits and asked what I can and cant do. They gave me a nice thick booklet which had heaps of questions in it. They said if you can satisfy whats asked in here, no probs if you cant you will need an eng.. cert to back it up. I would start there, the guys at Midland were really helpful.

I've just purchased 2, 1976 2 door rangies, total price $1300. 1 with a 3.5 on lpg and in okay cond with spare new panels, the other has a reco 4.4lt leyland motor with zero kms on it.
Now i will start a ute conversion the only thing is there is not alot of info on this, that i can find.
I want to be able to legally drive the thing on the road.
can i be directed the right way?

here my one when i first started, shit it pulled the chicks back in the pimp looking days, now its just a mud pig, to look proffessional you need the pillar to be sloped backwards not just flat sheet, this will then crete parcel shelf inside for doof doof box(check it out micka i wasnt lying)
the lower windo sills lend its self well as you can seen it forms a good flat edge for the style side, the checkerplate idea i got from the old series l rovers, rather than shape around the wheel gaurds, just make 3 folds on both sides, which than doubles as storage lockers.
behind the front c/p panel is a 100l gas tank which is well tucked away by the parcel shelf design, note where the the c/p sides meets the floor, its standard curragated floor in the rangie which ties in well.
