Cracked cylinder head TD42 1990 Patrol

Post by Zulu »

Thank you for replies on high kilometers, I have spoken to previous owner he informed me that the vehicle engine was overhauled due to the cracked head at 262000km but the head was never replaced just skimmed and pressure tested. The vehicle now has 380 000km and last month the current owner replaced a cylinder head gasket. My question with this vehicle been driven for 120 000km with a cracked head what could next be popping up for repairs. How long before one of the other cylinder head gaskets needs to be replaced.Should one not walk away and start looking for another Patrol.

if the head has a crack run the car with the radiator cap off and it should bubble like a spa bath
GQ LWB TD42, boost, lockers etc

Unsure where head is cracked, to replace head in South Africa about R 8 200.00 just for head ( 1australian$=4 rands in SA) the labour not included.
I am just a bit worried about other possible damage caused by the cracked head that is currently not showing and might jump up and bite me a few months down the line even if I do replace the head now.

I've had cracked heads on my old Isuzu Bighorn (3.1td) and Toyota Surf (2.4td) and both ran fine after head replacements.

Generally if a head is cracked its buggered, if one crack is repaired then another will surface in the near future. It is safer to replace the head. Having said that, I have seen heads reapired & go for the life of the car. You just cannot tell sometimes.
Don't ask me, ask them. I'm just runnin for my life myself.
Well they are all following you...
No they ain't, I'm just in front...............
