Looking for my first 4x4
Hi Guys,
Just wanting your opinion on which 4x4 to get.
I am looking for a daily driver, but also something which I can mod up and do 4x4ing, fishing, camping, etc.
I was looking at getting a dual cab Hilux, for a bit extra room inside and still have the bucket rear, most likely with the 2.8TD.
Anyone have any feedback which may be useful or any alternatives which I could look at, perhaps a Holden Rodeo?????

Im looking hard at the moment for a GQ Patrol, love the model, and think they currently offer good value for $$$ (used)

What is your Budget?
And how serious do you want to get into 4wd'ing. Example-Just easy fire trails and beach work with a bit of camping? Or big tyres, difflocks flexy suspension and some real hard off road work?
This will determine what you should buy more than anything. Also can you do the mods yourself?

Budget is between 10 - 13K, to start with just wanting for camping and moderate 4x4ing.
Because it is most likely going to be used as a daily driver, I dont really want to mod it up too much which would make it impractical for road use.
However, is saying this I would like to get a lift kit, body lift and big wheels.
Depending on the mods I may or may not be able to do them myself, at the moment I have commodore which most of the work I do myself so I would have to see.

If you want a daily driver in that price range to do the stuff you wanna do the scope is just about limitless.
If you want something a bit cheaper to run a lightly modded Vitara wagon would do. The money you'd save in purchase and running costs would easily lift it up to a similar standard as the others off road too. Probably Feroza's and Sierra's are a little too small for your needs.
If you want a little more size (but more expensive to run) - especially if you have kids to take camping then something like a Pathfinder, Surf or Pajero should do too. They should all be able to get you where you need to go.
You'd be able to buy a bigger 4wd like a GQ with the money too, but if it's mainly used on the road and for camping, then maybe you're better off with something in the middle ground. Running costs on the bigger 4by's are huge - even compared to a commodore.
Don't think you have to have a rigid axle tank - for the sort of use you're talking about it sounds like it's overkill.

go the hilux
id defenately go for a hilux i biught 1 for the same uses but when looking you want to get a solid front end they are easy to work on easy to lift and are setup nicely standard i only have standard suspension and 31"a/t and it done all the 4x4ing i was interested in dual cab carried enough gear for three weeks traveling. I also have the 2.8 turbo disel and am happy with the power and fuel consumtion. All u will realy need is 2inch body lift and you will run 33s happly.Just make sure you get solid front axel i didnt and am looking at about a $4000 conversion doing it all my self

I'd go for the Hi Lux with a 3.8V6 or a nice V8
