97 disco ZF

Post by rangemann »

i'm doing a rangie conversion. 5l holden into a 84 rangie. my 84 came with torque flite so i'm putting in zf 4speed. i've got a marks adaptor for a zf 4speed. my problem is the landy wrecker guy has lined me up a 97 zf, he reckons that if i dont do anything with the electronic stuff, like the hill decent, then it won't make a difference for what i want to do. is the flywheel bolting pattern the same as say a 86 zf, hence will fit my adaptor. can i put a 97 gearbox in? could i get the hill decent shit to work at a later date maybe, that might be useful. pretty much, will it work or not.

A 97 ZF will fit the bolt pattern is the same it's just different bolts that it uses (they are longer) Also I would be to concerned with the Hill decent crap. From my understanding it would use the ABS system in a Disco I would think it used the gear box unless it had a electrical torque convert cut out. It was only the ZF's in the HSE's that have full electrical shite in them. We got a 96 ZF into an 89 Rover without to much pain. Just remember that the gearbox mounts are different so you will need one of those. To get the gearbox working you don’t need to wire anything up at all.

Why not keep the t/flite, with the extra power the high ratio will be fine and you would only gain a slight drop in rpm@100klm/h with the zf.

Which trans case are you using.

THe LT230 from the 3 speed auto's had 1.003-1 high range gears while the 4 speed autos and manuals had 1.192-1 gears.

Depending on which tyres size yo u run revs will be very low at 100Kph using 3.54 diffs.

35 inch 1550 rpm
33 inch 1650 rpm
32 inch tyres 1750 rpm
31 inch 1800 rpm

with 1.192 T/case.

35's 1850
33's 1950
32's 2000
31's 2100

ok, off the top of my head i don't know my tyre size. i think 245/75/r16.
righto so what's the inches on that? just had a test, brains dead, those numbers are too hard for right now.
too late torque flight is out. zf's going in. i already bought it. and who says you can't get the gearbox out attached to the engine through the engine bay. it's the easiest way so take that hayne's automotive guide.
