Tony I have come to the same conclusion talking with a few people yesterday, I think my best choice will be a EFI 1.6L. That way I can use a vitara auto and get one of these http://ottindustries.com/kicker4.htm Laughing so I can get my auto and use a lux t-case
This OTT adapter is not a reality ATM, I ordered this part 6 months ago and have been stuffed around somewhat, so we at M&M have cut a new plate adapter of own own and can adapt the Vitara auto directly threw the plate onto the hilux and only 25mm.
So now the legnths are going to be about 7 inches shorter giving more/less angle on rear driveshaft

why do u want to run the hilux transfer? you could slot a whole vitara setup in easy as, and i've never heard reports of them having drama's with the tcases

Why ? Why not.
Stronger
More ratios
duals
Ive got 5.0/1 and 2.28/1 = 11.4/1 lowrange
mated behind the auto
into hilux diffs
with chromoly axles
I have endless tyres choice.

What else would you rather use?

wasn't really directed at you bentzook, more at bubs. but anyway, duals would be the only reason that i see to go lux transfer.

The ultimate is known as the dual ultimate crawler, this combines reduction gears in the rear case and stock 2.28 gears in the forward crawler. This combination results on an over all crawl ratio of 159 to 1 .

With two transfer cases you have twenty forward gears and 4 different reverse gears.

i have very little knowledge about all this, but has anyone thought about a 4AG-ZE (i think thats it) with a garret turbo / SC12 blower?

way out of your price range (probably) but its worth a peek anyway

i think they are 1.6L so thats ok legally... (i think)

If i build another Registered 4WD it will be a LWB Zook with this drive train along with prob 60 series diffs. But it would only ever be registered to use in the NSW comps that require rego but no Eng Certs.

4AGZE

Post by CanberraMav »

I had a 4AGZE motor in my zook and it went very hard. I would not convert to this motor though if going through a build up again. It just has too much on tap for off road driving. It will just about twist your zook in half if driven hard. Everything has to be strengthened to suit and there is much more involved than just slapping in the motor. It ended up being a costly project that returned some pretty ordinary results. If i built up a zook again it would be keeping the standard 1.3. This motor although gutless will happily rev its guts out for an entire day on $10 bucks of fuel. What more could you want? Spent money on other mods like gearing etc
Thats my 2cents anyway

CanberraMav what exactly did you do, do you have a buildup writeup or anything? What did you strengthen?
As im getting a 4AGE hopefully within the week for a hundred bucks from a mates fiancee's totalled corolla, and am planning on installing it.
Being FWD i assume you transplanted onto zook gearbox? DIY or did you get a kit?

I didnt do the work on mine. I dont have the zook anymore i got rid of it because the problems associated with the conversion were just eating into my time and $. The toyota gearbox was used for the conversion but obviously not the Fwd one. I cant remember of the top of my head exactly what box it was now. It was something 50 maybe if anyone knows? Maybe T50 or T51? Also with these motors its better usually to get a whole front cut as the computer and loom etc can be hard to source seperately and from memory they are different. The vibrations were the biggest issue in this conversion and i still have not been in a toyota converted zook that didnt have bad vibrations. I would sell the toyota motor and get a vitara motor for the conversion.Save you $ down the track i reckon.
There are alot of bodgy Zook conversions in the ACT thanks to a certain workshop that specialize in them. The better ones i have seen are the vitara conversion. The GTI motor is good if you can source one. I would prefer a carby to EFI on a vehicle used for off road for simplicity etc

A very good mate of mine put a G13B Gti engine in his Sierra. Also added a Hitachi turbo (from a std 12AT RX7), EMS Computer, and a Soarer intercooler.

The engine swap was quite simple and the results were very desirable. I think the hardest part was finding a heavy duty clutch for the std gearbox. The car never goes off road, but on the street it is one mean ass machine!!

There is an article on http://www.autospeed.com

What i can't help laughing is them ranting on about how they put the japanese domestic market 84kw motor in.

Image

Now if you note the square intake? The 'Cultus Gti' with the 84-86kw has a round intake. If the motor was from japan then it prob came off the Jap cultus with the G13b motor with 9.5:1 compression which had the kws similar to our aussie market gti (10:1 compression on poorer fuel)

Good stuff to know before you lay out large sums upgrading your g13 engine to a 'JDM' Mmmm envy my round intake, pistons, crank and DOHC head

Just my 2 cents worth...

I have been reliably running a G15B engine (1500cc) with a GTI 1300 Twin Cam Head and a WRX Turbo at 7psi boost. Using EMS Stinger Computer. Has almost 100kw at the wheels!

This gets driven very very very hard off road in comps and all kinds of stuff. The only thing i break is CV's but havent done that for a while and i fried a clutch a little while back. I havent hurt my gearbox and my series 1 rockhopper is still going strong although i have been through a few transfer case mounts until i found one strong enough!

Its lots of fun to drive on the road especially in the wet and well its got locked diffs so even more fun! Stirs up the local hoons cause it out accelerates v8 commodores and the like!

This has cost me over the last 4-5 years around $5000 - $7000. Main reason was before i put in the turbo it never ran right. Spend thousands talking to mechanics and getting things sorted out and also various rebuilds. Found out in the end that the 1300 gti engine that i was running before i went the 1500 block was high compression. The 1500 is a low compression block. By using the 1300 high compression head and the 1500 low compression block basically turned the while thing into a sluck. Barely got 40kw at the wheels and chewed copious amounts of fuel. Once we finally figured this out on went the turbo and man what a rig to drive!

If i had to do it all again i would definatly first look at the G16 1600 16valve efi engine. I have wired up 4 of these for guys and they make the best difference to the zook yet. I wouldnt even bother with a turbo or supercharger cause they have heaps of power for any zook on and off road!

I will try and dig up a pic of my engine bay in the next few days and post it up.

i agree, KEEP IT SIMPLE STUPID.
i'm too stupid to get it right first time every time :D

evey engine convertion has ended up costing more, taking longer and been more hastle than its worth.
however i would look at putting a 1600 belano in my jimny for better highway cruising.( i guess that we will never learn :D )

nope, apparently I hate suzukis so nobody should be surprised by that

4AGZE

2 of my mates have done this conversion, Ben (Krawla Kustoms) drove from Sydney to the Gold Coast in 2nd after the auto shat itself, revving at about 6000 - 8000rpm for hours and the engine loved it. Still going strong now.
andither mate Rod, just thrashes the crap out of his at every available opportunity.

Strong motors, worth the extra $$$

I couldn't agree more, after getting my 4AGE/Toy 5spd up and running, I've never been fully happy with the vibrations from the engine. It's not a bad vibration, just noticable, but something the original 1.3L never had it. With that in mind however, I couldn't be more happy with the power it puts out, it revs like hell, and has better/smoother gear changes cause of the toyota box(2 bonus's....when running 32's the speedo's nearly corect, and hydro clutch aswell)... It's great on the hi-way, great off-road, loves the sand, and nothing beats seeing the smiles wiped off ya mates faces when your zook easily whips their cruiser/patrol up sand dune and hill climbs.
