I had to modify my custom made winch bumper to house the 8274-50 (X9 before).
Well, after some chit-chat with forums mates and the nice comments from John (Bush65)
I tried to follow their hints/guidelines and what I have now after "some" additional bending/welding is this...
[kevlar suit mode:ON!]
I could do that, but I'd like to add some side plates first
so to use the holes below
(where the JATE rings mount)
throw a couple of bolts/nuts in and get more support.
My biggest concern is the stock bumper mounts and twisting of the bumper. Be careful if you are doing a double line pull back to yourself. The mount itself is fine.
I'm just finishing off my 8274 mount. I should have a picture next week to show how I got around this.
P.S.
Uhm,why do you think double pulling should be an issue?
I have fitted 2 X shackle mounting brackets
right "in line" with the chassis rail...this should spread the strain 50/50...
...shouldn't it?
Or so I think...
The stock bumper mounts are 2x10mm bolts on either side. With the winch mounted above the bumper, it will be pulling hard on the top connection of the bolts (no sharing of load to the bottom). Then when you add on a straight pull from the shackle mounts, it could be enough to break the 10mm bolts at the top.
My winch cradle is similar to yours but extends back over the front crossmember. I have added 2 x 3/4" bolts into the crossmember. This setup prevents the twisting action of the bumper and removes most of the winch load from the stock bumper mounts so they can be used solely for the front anchors.
so would it be better to mount the winch in between the chassis rails rather than above them. all i can picture is more compression and downward pressure the higher the winch is mounted???

I wonder what Discodino will think...!
Much better now Michele. Some of the gussets are not needed.
John has pointed out the problems with the bumper mounting bolts and twisting.

Oh,2 things for you...
1)Did you hear from Keith D. recently?
2)Could you please send me a couple of pics of
safety belt brackets in the Truck Cab?
Yes, those pictures are just back from the galvanizer.
Mr. D is working in Washington DC. I chat via email every now and then. He should be back here in a short while. Last time I saw him, we traded bumpers. He took my MOD bumper and I took his regular bumper for mounting the winch (after some mods).
My 90 is a hard top at the moment and uses the normal hard top brackets. When it was a truck cab, the seat belt reels went through holes at bulkhead level which was a real PITA. A made some simple bracket from angle to munt them from the roof seam. No pictures, sorry.
Nice looking bumpers...I like to keep the winch in line with the chassis rails and as far back as possible so that when pulling up or down you minimize the rotational forces...
That is a trade off between the approach angle and the radiator clearance of course...
I like!
