How much guard to cut for 37's??

Post by mikesmith »

hey guys

got an mq patrol shorty looking to run some 37 swamper's in the bush the car will have a 3 inch body and 2 inch spring lift. i am going to have to cut the guards but i just need to know where? front and rear of the front guards will prob take out like 2 inches do i need to take some from the top??.

with the rear i was going to take some out of each side and leave the top?? or cut the top to match the front.

car is not far off getting painted so i want to get the chops rite and out the way before laying the colour on.

any help appreciated thanks

mike

Depends on your rim spacing really, and I'm afraid even a 2" SL can mean different things to different MQ's. You'll really have to bolt the tyres up and work it out yourself. I have 2" BL, 2" SL with 35's, and had to do a bit of cutting.
Probably not the top of the front arch, but certainly front and back - and inside the front where the indicator and indicator gaurd are - is going to be tight. The back will rub when turning towards that side, and the front will rub under compression (shackle swings forward).

On the rear, the back more than the front because under compression the wheel moves back (shackle is at rear), and you don't have to worry about the wheel turning. Depending on your width the top might not need much attention.

For reference I just took 15mm or so off all the way around on the front. Bending a new lip brought it out to 30mm or so. On the rear I probably went about 20mm all the way around. Also chopped of sections out of the front fender near where the indicator is. Only place I have rubbing now is the indicator gaurd at the front.

hey heath

i dont mind going to cut big amounts out of the guards. i dont have the money atm to buy the tyres but i am in the middle of a respray so i wanted to get the guards ready for when they come.

the tyres will prob go on 15x10 cruiser offset sunnys.

how did you go taking 20mm out around the rear that would bring it very close to the fuel filler flap??

i will just take huge amounts out of the front and i was going to take the rear out to where the inner guards meet on the front of the rear. will just match them all around.

should get me 37's if it does'nt then my mq is not meant to run 37's just go for a big 36.

Yeah kinda close to the fuel filler, but no worries. Have a look here:
