Research on XR6T transplanted onto a GU Patrol
r0880 wrote:Back on Gen III topic.
Had one on dyno yesterday at work.
- Extracters, exhaust
- ported throttle body
- ported MAF sensor
Made 218rwkw @ 6800rpm.
Made VERY little power down low.
This is why I dont think its a good motor for a heavy 4x4
my BA makes 230rwkw stock! maybee someone should look at putting a 5.4 into a patrol
i know of a couple of patrols with gen3's in them none are stock. as they perform poorly stock. but with a little tickle they can be made to go. but tickles on these things dont come cheap.
my GQ makes close to 200rwkw it is a dead stock TB42 motor with a couple of hunderd thousand k's on it. if it was a purpose built fresh 4.5 i think 300rwkw would be easy.but i challange you to keep it in a straight line
not a chance a stock GQ would make 200rwkw . mine is a STOCK MOTOR with a turbo, I/C & running a autronic ecu.the point i was making is that a turbo on the side of a fresh purpose built low compression TB45 is a good option and could make plenty of power. and 300rwkw is a lot of power but very achievable from these motors.r0880 wrote:I have high doubts of a stock GQ having 200rwkw, and stock V8 falcon having that much also. 300rwkw is a *LOT* of power.
i also have the dyno sheets from my BA GT that made 230rwkw on the dyno its dead stock!
Mate here bought a 4.5 GU racetruck from Les Siviour. Motor puts out 300HP with a Motec. He has changed it to Class8 and now runs a nicely worked Chev. The 4.5 motor is still kicking around if you're interested in it. PM me if you want contact details.OnPatrol wrote:Thanks for the info and keep them coming.
There is a Delco bellhousing that will fit the XR6T onto the Nissan gearbox, as well as engine mounts. The exhaust is still a problem cause we are thinking 3.5" to 4.0" pipes.
We're still weighing up the options. The second option is to freshen up the bottom end of the 4.5 and use GQ rods. I already spent money on new heads and cam, so it's only the bottom end that needs work.
We were entered in the VicWinch Challenge last weekend, but we didn't even start because of electrical problems. I couldn't get parts on Friday. The internals of the dizzy carked it, so it is important to have parts that can be picked up in a hurry.
I'm very interested in doing the OBC in 2006, so one of the consideration is fuel quality. The XR6T will run on regular unleaded if it's the only fuel available and will be more economical during the transport stages. I spoke to Adam Bird last night and that was one of the problems he had durng the OBC 2005. Even with Octane boost, his turbocharged 4.2 engine couldn't run at optimal power, but the V8s still ran well on lower grade fuel.

Ah ok sounds feasible I considered stock as in no bolt ons either.
Thats good output from the ford motor I must admit, although I think they should have just put the 4.6 US spec motor in.
The nissan V8s are very cheap Ive noticed at the importers. VH45 running twin turbo's would be an interesting bit of gear.

has anyone got pics of the exhaust manifolds on these motors (vh45) as the v is so wide it must be a nightmare. mine only just fit between the narrow nissan chassis.

single turbo is easier then one would think. its simply a matter of a return pipe around the back of the engine, much like the VG30DET.
there is a Z31 in perth thats been built by hyperdrive which has a VH45, single snail and engine management - 450hp - stock guts
potential plus, and not as expensive as duel turbos, manifolds etc

yeah, stock manifolds don't come anywhere near fitting. these aren't the best photos, but you can see by the position of the turbos how far outboard of the chassis rails the custom manifolds end up being. luckily the motor is short enough to allow the dump pipes to wrap back around the rear of it. this one is twin turbo on straight lpg and gets along pretty damn quick.bru21 wrote:has anyone got pics of the exhaust manifolds on these motors (vh45) as the v is so wide it must be a nightmare. mine only just fit between the narrow nissan chassis.

it is exactly the same as a GQ patrol auto. just has a different output housing. the GQ output can be swapped on to it. it is very strong, but it has computer issues with different diff ratios and tyre sizes and goes into limp mode for no reason. getting the motor over 8000rpm also seems to put the auto into limp mode. no fun at all. aftermarket ECU fixes both these problems.r0880 wrote:Anyone know how strong these autos are, or even better a manual box that bolts up?VH45-DE: 4494cc EFI DOHC 32 valve V8 . BTW that blue one ^^^ looks tuff.
the blue one cranks out about 600hp, and has been driven from canberra to queensland a few times, towed a boat up there once even. it is a good reliable truck.

Mate I have seen these forums over and over and everyone has one thing to tell you.
I would suggest either turboing your 4.5 at least no engineer issues and the relaibilyty of parts when needed or you dont have to modify parts to fit and you will get great power out of one of those.
A lot of Reasearch and development has gone into this engine for it to perform off road. It is an engine designed for a 4WD not a drag car so it makes power in the right place.
If you think that is too boring, I would look at a vh45. You could get a complete half cut from wreckers for $1500, this includes tranny, computer etc etc.
great value for money, and great power. If you need more power spen another $5000 and supercharge it.
I have too mates running this setup both have GQ shorty with the Auto and both are really happy with it.
However, when you compare the money they have spent in getting that V8 there you look at GQHOON s truck he has spend similar dollars and getting 230 at the rear and it hoots along. I have been on a night drive with both trucks and the turbo eats the V8 for breakky.
they also sound pretty cool running on high boost.
I have just turboed my diesel and bought a ball bearing t28 Garrett from MTQ paid $1550 for it. Absolute bargain. Go to MTQ in Dandenong and ask for wilfried. Ball bearing turbo for $1550.
Also have intercooled my Gu $800 fitted plummed, drive in drive out.
Also in dandenong its called racetek. The guy normally does race cars but can also build the most awesome manifold you have ever seen and very cheap.
Just message me if you want his details, his honest and cheap.
he has a EL XR6 there at the moment running 400 Kw at the rears. he is a clever man for power.

I can remember a black SWB maverick in a 4x4 magazine going back probly 10-12 months ago now. It had a nissan (infinity i think) V8, with twin turbo's, and made some rediculously large amount of HP. Cost a lot of $$$ though.
Also, if you're still thinking of an XR6T conversion, there's heaps of "packaged" mods you can get. Like buying milk at the supermarket - loads to choose from, all depending on the size of your wallet.
Some other things to keep in the back of your mind:
- Think about the engine's weight (lighter is faster, and more balanced)
- If turboing or supercharging, the motor/forced induction can be set up for low, med, or high RPM. You can aslo use multi-stage boosting (similar to launch control) to make it more driveable/eceonomical.
- Motors with forced induction obviously run loads better, and last longer on high RON fuel.
- Turbo's and superchargers sound GREAT when they're winding up!!!

The info on this thread has been great. Like I mentioned in the original thread, it was reasearch only at that stage. There is still big advantages in going to the XR6T, but I'm looking at a few events in 2006 and time is no longer on my side, so we're doing the following mods on my current 4.5 ltr engine:
- Water cooled heads
- Autronics system
- Upgraded injectors
- Replace dizzy with coil packs
- Use GQ rods
- Turbo 450HP Garret ball bearing (only a small turbo to keep the power low down)
- Custom manifold, same as GQHoon and Shrek
- Front air intercooler
- 3.5" mandrel exhaust
Work will start in early Dec and it will take a month to complete.

I'd turbo the 4.5 just to keep things simple, actually I'd supercharge it to keep it even more simple (no intercooler to get full of mud / dirty / damaged when you hit something for one, and much simpler piping setup - ie, w/o the intercooler the piping becomes dead simple).
If you want reliability, rebuild the motor straight up and fix any of the niggling issues that they are renowned for, and run an aftermarket ECU and get it tuned professionally.
You'll make shitloads of power on a 4.5 supercharged motor, more then enough for any 4wd - anyone who disagrees is just looking for wank factor.
It will be a lot simpler due to you just adding a supercharger, you won't have to worry about clearence issues or new engine mounts, or engineers !
There is no point going to the xr6t engine, I think you will find the Nissan motor is just as tough when forced induction comes into the picture, and if it's done correctly.
Nissan don't make weak motors - even the little CA18 can pull rediculous numbers when pushed.
That said, I think you should just sell your rig and buy something lighter so you don't need to have such a rediculous amount of power.
That, or fit one of the 7.2L V8 turbo diesel's or whatever they are from the Hummer's - that would be an absolute TORQUE monster.

Front mount intercooler?? Wouldn't a top mount be better suited to a comp style truck?
Looking at the damage my 6 month old radiator has copped, with a car that gets maybe one run in the bush every month, i'd say a front mounted intercooler would be a problem magnet.
There'd be nothing worse than having to plug stone holes in an intercooler while on the road, also remembering that it probly cost upwards of $500.
