HJ60 oil pressure switch

Post by sambo »

On the oil pressure switch there is two terminals, one is for the gauge and the other spade terminal is a switch for the fuel control relay.

For a while now the car has been a bit harder to start. This is because the oil pressure switch has been unplugged. firstly there are three wires hanging around that area yellow-black for the gauge, a white-black and a yellow-black. Is it the y-b that attaches to the switch, or the w-b.

When i plug in the y-b the car starts much better, just like it used to. but then shuts down after a few seconds cos the fuel control relay can't see any oil pressure. I tried replacing the switch since it was leaking anyway but that didn't fix it. Has to be an electrical problem since the gauge shows i have oil pressure.

Any ideas
Thanks
Sam

P.S. if anyone needs to buy a switch i got one from motospecs for only $32 where repco wanted $92.

I just popped the bonnet on my 60, and had a look for you. First of all, its a bugger of a spot to see clearly. It looks as though i have a yellow/black and *black/white wire attaching to the pressure sender.

The one that attaches to the centre of the sender is a plain black and yellow wire. The one that attached to the outer side of the sender appears to be a black and *white wire with spots of red along it. I cant see the 3rd wire that you have.

I have had a few problems a long the way with my edic system. After i pulled the front drivers side kick panel out, and disturbed the edic relay, i started having problems starting the car. I found that the soldered connections on the circuit board werent crash hot after 20 years. I simply resoldered them, and have had no problems since.

Just a thought.

*Edit- Upon closer examination, the yellow black wire with red may infact be a black and white wire with red. Colour differentiation under crap torch light is difficult.

ok on my 2H there is an oil pressure sender, and a second oil pressure switch.

The oil pressure switch is completely seperate to the sender and is located down and a bit closer to the bell housing (in the block, not in the alloy Oil COoler Housing). This is what is used by the EDIC system to confirm oil pressure.

The oil pressure sender unit has nothing to do with the EDIC system, and exists only for the guage.

I think you are right. I just had another look and i can see another switch near the bell housing right behind the starter motor. Its been a while since i had the starter motor out. It looks like a single wire switch, but as i said, its really difficult to see. Perhaps this is the 3rd wire you speak of Sambo? If you look up from underneath the car you can see the switch Shadow talks about, but I cant see the colour of the wire coming off it.

i found the switch you were talking about but now when i start it up first time after a few seconds it shuts down due to not enough oil pressure in time. but if i restart it straight away it stays on. so it all seams to be working ok except the oil pressure takes a bit too long to build up.

Any suggestions.

Yup, i have the same problem. Never done anything about it but... I just make sure im giving it a few more revs when i first start it up until the oil gauge starts to move.

Thats what i do also. I tried running a slightly thicker oil once, and that fixed the problem. Although, i didnt like the fact that the oil was too thick.
