Service Histories
What good are the service history books that come with a new car once the warranty has expired?
Looked at a car with a mate and the guy selling it had the original book from the dealer, the first four or five services were signed off with a stamp from the dealer. After that the next six or seven just have a stamp saying REPCO, an illegible signature and the odometer reading. The car is due for the next service now and the guy selling it has only had it for six months so has not had it serviced himself.
I don't suspect that the car has not been maintained, but surely anyone (me even) could make up a stamp and sign off the service history of an older car to make it look like it has always received full services.

i looked at buying a disco 2 a while ago. it had a full service history from a major land rover dealer. i took the pos overnight for a look at.
last service was 400k ago. 110,000k on the clock.
power steering pump was noisy as hell, ps oil was burnt and smelt bad.
massive oil leak from rocker cover.
rear brakes metal on metal.
battery fluid 1" below plates.
blowby and brown rust? stuff on bottom of oil filler cap.
this baby hadn't been serviced for quite a while, but the books were good
i think you can go to a dealer and say "just an oil change thanks" and they will still stamp the book ????

Spit my last breath
buying any second hand vehicle is a gamble, and although service history can be an indicator, it obviously has to be weighed against the evidence of the condition of the vehicle. If you aren't mechanically savvy enough to make an inspection, pay for an NRMA or other inspection. It's no guarantee but it does give you a better indication than a stamped service book, along with an idea of cost to fix whatever is obviously broken.
Free air locker to the first 20 callers!
suprised it actually had any oil left in it.. most leak to MT from stock. its a dealer optionbad_religion_au wrote:sounds like how landrovers come off the production linepopeye wrote:i looked at buying a disco 2 a while ago. it had a full service history from a major land rover dealer. i took the pos overnight for a look at.

My Rodeo has a full service history from new for the last 180k. First 70k was mostly by Holden but I have always had it serviced by Ultratune. As far as the log book goes it is just stamps, odo readings and signatures. However I have every service invoice since I have had the car so when I sell it I can prove the car has been looked after and serviced properly not just had oil changes done every "service".
Some people reckon that a car with dealer services is worth more but personally after having had a number of company vehicles that get serviced by dealers I wouldn't want a car that has been dealer serviced.
I have been looking for a replacement second hand 4wd lately and some that have complete service histories are, after a look over, in worse condition than a car without.

Re: Service Histories
Then people know if its ever had a service, tune, or been looked after. People still need to get cars serviced, and tuned dont they?DiddyZook wrote:What good are the service history books that come with a new car once the warranty has expired?.
Service history can be a good indicator of how particular the owner was.
I'm in the car trade, many of the vehicles i look at trading are late model 2000+. Generally most people have their cars serviced every 10,000km however you also get quite a few vehicles that are serviced at sporadic intervals 10,000km then might go another 15,000km etc etc.
Service history does not guarantee that the vehicle is as presented, i've seen plenty of service books that have been filled out in entirety with the same stamp (you can see the first one is clear and fades as the history goes on) and using the same colour pen with the same person signing the book. This indicates that the book was all filled out yesterday.
If you can find out who the workshop was, call them and ask them to bring up the history. If they help you out and you buy the car be sure to take it to them to do some work to say thank you.
Well I'm guessing that they didn't think everyone would carry on like a big bunch of sooky girls over it like they have........
Exactly - ring the people who did the service and confirm. I get my 4x4 serviced at the same place, non-dealer, everytime from new. The mechanic would be only too happy to give the histroy on the car and confirm that it was in fact serviced there, on time.sierrajim wrote: If you can find out who the workshop was, call them and ask them to bring up the history. Say Utemad, (general whinge comming)
I hope your Ultratune is better that the one I have been going to .... or should I say had been going to.. I assume they are a francise..
History.... on buying my truck I had my local ultratune give it the once over. Clean bill of health, got them to do a complete service.. all oils all filters etc etc etc. Have been going there up till recently as they are around the corner from where I work.
Recently been getting a severe vibration type noise coming what seems to be centrally (around gearbox) at a speed over 80K. Check all the obvious things.. loose bolts, mounts and the likes.. no luck. My thoughts are gearbox / transfer case.... bit of oil under the body around the g/box and TF case so tonight I decide ... drop the oil out of both and measure to see if I have a leak and replace.....
It has taken me 2 hours to remove the bloody drain plugs and fill plugs on both gearbox and transfer case. Final solution was a half metre length of water pipe on the end of the socket wrench to get leverage. My wheels were easier to get off!! What they tightened them up with I have no idea.
Transfer case oil looked like it have never been changed... probably because the exhaust pipe is in the way, and the oil that came out was like water. I have only done 50,000K since i bought it.
So... my point.
I agree on having a regular service. I agree on getting the book stamped as it is an indication that the truck is at least thought about.... but the bottom line is that the quality of service is only as good as the people doing it!
My local guys .. butchers... is the stamp on the service manual worth the paper it is stamped on... a resounding no!!
Kindest Regards
Rainsey

Ultratune tried to rip me off a few years ago, so I've never been back.
I had the front discs and pads replaced somewhere, then 2 weeks later took it to ultratune for a service and stuff, they tried to tell me the front brake pads needed replacing.. the guy quickly changed his tune when I said they'd just been done... dodgey dodgey place... always preferred reputable local mecahnics instead of the big franchise mobs.

98 GU.. front locker, cheezy sliders, 33's, winch etc.. .... long shopping list.

The Ultratune I go to is fantastic. I have been going there for about 4.5 years and I couldn't recommend them enough. I do some work on my ute myself so I am always looking over it etc. So I can tell if they have done the work or not. They have bent over backwards to help me out before. So I have given them the benefit of the doubt in return when they have not done some things quite as I would have liked. Give and take. That is the benefit of a long term relationship with a good mechanic. I take my Wife's car there now too (now that she has one).
I would have thought not trusting a big franchise in favour of a small business is weird. As a franchise is a small business but they have the backup of the parent company. Which looks after the good name of the business and advertising etc. Plus any warranty issues you might have when you are travelling away from home. It all comes down to finding a good mechanic and building a relationship. Mine knows me by name and what I am up to even though I only go there every 6 months or so.

Dealers.....
When I had my Sti Subaru I got under it at 30,000kms (this is after three 'services' had been performed) and discovered the sump plug had never been touched.
Then I checked the oil and was as black as all fark. They hadn't touched the bloody thing!
Didn't bother killing the dealer as I had just sold it, but I'll never buy another car from them and will never use another dealer for servicing.
