hill starting a diesel with no elecrtics
had some electrical issues after visiting ormeau tonight.. like no electrics at all, no acc, no glow, no start. nothing.
so we are at the water tower (good place for a hill start) and we'd try and get my 3b started.
in 2nd, 2wd, clutch in, key to on, rolling down the hill and take the clutch out.. it sounds like the engine starts or is running but there is no accelerator.
you could hear the engine running (compression?) but when you didnt have the momentum and put the clutch in it would stall and stop.
anyway.. we diagnosed the problem to some a dodgy heavy cable to the alt and a fried fusable link..
but the question is why could i not accelerate after i had compression.
I thought the 3b was mostly mechancial (fuel pump? ).. I realise the edic motor is required to overfuel for starting would not work without power, but is this still required when hill starting? would you have to engage the edic motor manually while your rolling down the hill.

in any case it has to have some sort of shutoff for the diesel pump, you need to pull this to the run position as InSanE said.
With an Edic the easiest way is to drop the shaft off the edic motor and push the rod forward (toward radiator). From memory it should stay in the run position, but you may need to wire it there or something.
Most diesels have an electric solenid on the pump that turns the fuel off when it doesn't have power. If you want to start it you need to supply power to the solenoid.
It is often possible (but illegal on post 79? diesels) to put a mechanical cable (e.g. choke cable) instead of the solenoid - this gives you purely machanical operation and it will start fine without any electrics.

I could clutch start the car no worries even without a battery in the car.
I broke the cable once as well. I had to stall the car anytime I wanted to turn it off for about 6 months.
I would most likely still have that car rustung in the back yard if my brother hadn't rolled it.

I had one of the fuseable links go on me one night it was raining and i first noticed it when i was slowing down for a corner clutch in and the elec's turned off then the motor died!! I was probablly doing 15km and released the clutch in second and it all started again. After i stoped it wouldn't start and I ended up using a piece of solid wire to bridge the link. when i was driving it to the servo the volt meter was reading 16v when i was accelerating!! i was able to role alot of the way there luckly beacuse when i pushed the clutch in the volts dropped. The servo had some fuse wire so i was able to fix it and get home
