handheld uhf's

Post by -Mick- »

I don't know anything about handhelds cause I've always had in car ones but I like the idea of a more portable solution :)

Which ones are good :?: and what is the effective range on quality ones :?: I know the cheapy dick smith type ones are pretty basic like anything you get what you pay for  I'm referring to ones in the 150 - 250 price range :)

Ive got a uniden in car (5w) and a hand held GME (5w) with the scanner. The hand held works better than the Uniden in the car. Bloody sensational if you ask me. Cost a pretty penny, (about 400 bucks) but definately worth the coin. All sort of attatchments and in car kits available too. (VOX headsets etc)

I have one from supercheap worth about $40. Works well on the beach to about 5km. Have been using it for years. Has all the functions of my in car uniden.

I also recentley aquired an expensive uniden hand held which I am yet to use.

I will be at Fraser Isalnd in 2 weeks with both and will do a comparison.

Will let you know how they both compare if your interested.

You won't get a decent 5w handheld brand new for less than $369

These are I think the cheapest 5w handheld. However not by much. They are great for camping and 4wding as they are waterproof. I don't think anyone else makes a waterproof radio. We have two at work and they have copped an absolute hiding. Even had various chemicals spilt on them and they still work.

Problem with buying anything like this second hand is you will probably need a new battery. The cost of a new or reco'd battery may bring you near the price of a new radio.

Never heard of that brand before. You would want to do a bit of research on it before you buy.

that is a nice radio, the mods needed to make that work on normal public uhf and not amateur uhf , results in crappy signal and over heating, have had a few amateur uhfs modded to cb uhf and unless ur a radio egg head for joe blogs it will be more trouble than what its worth.

I had a GME uhf in my 80 and it was 100% better than my brother in laws uniden so i bought a GME hand held on special at Bris car sound for $79 and it works great if your just using it for 4wding or within a couple of k's of your target!

I would normally get GME over Uniden any day. However they don't make a waterproof one.

I used to repair radios. The Uniden ones I took apart were built like crap. Plus they would get interference when if you swapped a GME into the same vehicle using the same wiring etc wouldn't.

I've got the GME handheld tx-610 - can't say I'm too impressed by it. Very hard to hear / understand when driving and if you crank the volume up it just distorts and doesn't help much....

Wish I had bought a Uniden instead.

I have a pair of Oricom PMR1000R handhelds.
They are 1W, come with a dual charger and handsfree kit (great for comp guys using the VOX) also NiMH batteries, but will also take 4xAAA batteries (beware of any unit with proprietry batteries - they will cost a lot + inconvienience, i.e. high watt units)

Very happy with them.

I got them with with Suncorp Bank reward points - $18

More info http://www.oricom.com.au/pr_twoway_pmr1000r.php

Bear in mind that hendhelds are complimentary to in-car units. They will not be better than a correctly setup car unit with the big antenna and when you are driving you might want both hands on the wheel. Especially useful when you leave the car to guide the driver. I cannot see the point in mega $$$ UHF handhelds with big power drain.

Also handy for family outings to places like Movie World, the beach, etc...

yes haved tryed the cheap uhp handheld from cakp to 4b and not been able to communicate and then my 5 watt handheld and was no prob so if my kid gets bitten by a snake or i get stuck on my side i can reach camp which is why i can see the point in quality gear.
