Plastic grinding sort of noise?
Hi All,
Im getting some very weird sounds from my Feroza. They are intermittent, every now and then. I have heard them when standing still, when doing about 50, but not on the freeway. It sort of sounds like the sound that a plastic bottle makes when you crush it and it splinters... I cant find anything loose, I cant reproduce it, I think its coming from the front left... It is loud, its not hard to hear when it happens. When breaking, it sort of sounds like its about to start doing it, but quitely.
I have done about 200 km the last couple of weeks, but only heard it 5 or 6 times, only lasting for a few seconds.
Has anyone experienced something similar? And ideas?
Thanks,
Jo

Have no idea about problems with roza's, and you've probly already reasoned this out but here's my 2c. If its happening when ur not moving, you can rule out most of your drivetrain, and just comes down to what is moving when your car isn't - ie, fan??? Maybe hitting on something. Got air con??? could be something in that. Cant imagine there being anything 'plastic' of too much importance so i wouldn't stress too much
60 + Turbo, 33"s
Not at highway speed and it happens a bit when you're braking? Weird. Sounds like something is moving back and forth.
I've had the fan clatter on the fan shroud in the past. Thats the most likely chunk of fast moving plastic I can think of. I'd examine it for fresh wear and play. Otherwise... some debris in your heater blower perhaps?

Hmm... It doesnt seem to be the fans, and it happens at all speeds, all gears and accelarating and breaking. A mate heard it the other day when the car was standing still, and he reckons it is the exhaust, something loose there, but nothign is moving that I can find. I didnt hear it at all the 600km I did yesterday, so maybe it has sorted itself out?!

Hey,
Its running great, touch wood! Only thing is this noise that I havnt been able to localise. Ill have a look at the breakes hopefully tomorrow.
Otherwise its fine, we have done about 3000km so far, and its been excellent. A tad more comfortable than the troopy... The mechanic was very impressed when he saw it, and gave it the thumbs up!
Cheers!

The noise has been located.
At the same time as the gearbox was beeing rebuilt, the mechanic showed me something strange. Inside the clutch housing, there where tears in the metal... Like when you chop it, or tear it. A nut had come undone, and had been rattling, chewing, and slowly grinded itself away... He took the clutch apart, but there was no sign of it anywhere.. Sounds gone though, and he reassured me that while the damage looked bad, it wouldnt have any effect on the clutch.
And yes, I was having the gearbox rebuilt as well, as it was about to pop a bearing. Noisy in 2nd, 3d and 5th. Bearing kit was $300, labour was 14 hours.

The job should be well done. I always go to the same mechanic, because you get the impression they know what they are doing, and that they care. Never had a problem with any service there. He also provided road service for me when the old troopie broke down in both New Castle and Rockhampton! :-)
The bearing that had failed, he showed it too me, is like a hockeypuck, he told me that it was sealed, but in the rebuild, he would take of one of the seals, so that oil would get in. It is something he normally does, and it all runs a bit better. Dont know if your run of the mill would take the time to explain that sort of stuff to you.
