Bleeding Pump TD42
Bleeding Pump TD42
Messing around with fuel filters I now don`t seem to be able to bleed Injector Pump. I`ve followed Haynes manual bleeding pump first and then filter housing but truck fires up and runs a few minutes before stalling and running out of fuel. There is fuel in housing but none I think in IP. I don`t seem to be able to purge all the air from IP. Cos it still continues to make a spitting noise as I pump diaphragm on filter housing. May try it with pump screw removed. Iwas going to crack an injector open as I`ve done this on the Rover. In fact Rover just won`t start till you have bled pump a few times but when it starts then thats it. If air was in the injector rail would it start and run for two or three mins? Will tackle it tomorrow. Any help appreciated.

if you just changed the filter you shouldnt need to bleed the injector pump you just put the filter back on leaving the line to injector pump off and pump the primer pump untill it diesel comes out that hose then put the hose back on continue pumping untill it goes hard then it should start strait away, and its not uncommon for primer pumps to be faulty we had quite a few fail when i was working for nissan

Thanks mate. When you say primer pumps faulty do you mean that they didn`t pump any fuel or is there a hole in diaphragm which is pumping air into my IP. Yeah like you say usually no probs in changing filters. When pumping with all valves closed is the pump not supposed to go rock hard? Anybody else had this where IP seems to use one filling of fuel and then engine stops when fuel is spent. Would engine start and run for two minutes if there is an air lock between filter housing and IP.Any method for bleeding the whole system would be helpful.

G'day Lexi, i'm a newby to all this so please excuse. I did mine a couple of weeks back and had the same problem. A 5 minute job took me 3 hours. For me it came down to only hand tightening it all up. I found it really needs to get tighten up well. Any little bit of air will cause the stalling. I'm by no means a mechanic but hopefully this helps. screw it up real tight! cheers!
A simple tip to make the job easier:
Screw the water sensor into the bottom of the filter, then fill the filter up with deisel, the put it back onto the housing.
Saves all those hours pumping, all you do is wind her over on the starter motor till she starts, then once its running at idle(probably roughly) run round and pump the primer on the housing till it starts to run smoothly.

I've only ever pumped the primer pump after swapping the fuel filter and replacing the hoses because they were cracked once so far - as it's a new vehicle to me.
I do remember feeling the primer pump getting harder to pump after a half dozen strokes or so - I gather as it was meeting resistance from down the line - which was now filled with fuel and pressurising.
Does your primer pump get harder to push after a few strokes?

I didn't have problems with the pump... Just undid the bleed screw and got the missus to pump the thing as hard as she could until diesel came out. I took a bit..
Then I bled the filter. Undid the screw pumped a few times and nothing came out.... got my face up nice and close pumped the beegeezus out of it and copped a facefull. MMMMmmmm diesel... keep face away
Did this on the side of the road at the blue mountains after I got a tank full of terrible fuel in winter time..

Just fill up the filter with Diesel before you screw it back on like dieselboy said and make it easy for yourselves.DieselBoy wrote:A simple tip to make the job easier:

On top of the fuel filter there is a small o ring that goes over the part that actually screws into the filter. In the Gregory's manual a picture on page 80 shows an exploded view of the filter set up. The seal is between the sealing ring and the filter head. I know of this problem because one of the first times I changed my filter I lost this seal without knowing it. After priming the pump the car would start and idle for a few minutes but when the filter emptied it would start sucking in air and stall. It took me about half a day to work this out and about $2.60 from Nissan for the seal. The problem disappeared straight away.

Ok guys. I have tried all the suggestions and still the same. When bleeding IP the fuel still seems to be hissing. I can fill my filter unit no problem from pump on top of unit and then pump it from filter to IP then tighten everything up and pump goes hard but not rock solid. Checked rubber that seats into centre of filter unit and it seems ok. I put it in hot water anyway to get it back in shape but no difference Truck starts on throttle and runs for two minutes until IP is empty. Any ideas?

Thanks for all replies. Still got problem. Can`t seem to get air free fuel from filter housing to IP. When priming it is still bubbling at bleed screw on IP. Close screw and it starts for a few minutes runs rough and will rev to about 3.5k and eventually dies. If you pump while it`s running it keeps going another little bit then dies. Primer unit will have to be renewed as next step I think. Took out heater plugs and cracked open 3 injectors then whizzed it on starter. Fuel coming out two feed rails but on the third it seemed to bubble. When it was running opened all feed rails and each one made a difference to running as they were opened and closed. Renewed all rubber pipes at steel pipe rails and doused everything in spray when it was running . No sign of bubbles or suction . New filter tried filled with fuel.....no change. Old filter had cruddy looking fuel in bottom so opened bleed on IP and blew a filter full of diesel through IP with low pressure air line......still the same. Any ideas appreciated.
