12v or 24v ?
Can someone tell me the advantage of 24v winch over a
12v winch?
Is it pulling power or longer power ect??
Cheers Ian.

not really the energy is the same 12vx500a = 24vx250a. the main difference is less energy is wasted in resistance. a 12v spools no load faster, a 24 marginly faster at full load and the ability of a handful of lbs more at full load.

OK!!????
So what is the advantage of 24v winching in the OBC trucks
and do all run 24v.
Seems like a lot of extra effort for little gain,
I still dont fully understand, sorry guys.
And yes i've just finnish watching OCB 2005 on DVD.(exellent).
Cheers Ian.

they don't all rund 24 volt.
some run 12volt motors on 24 volts, normally in one direction and 12 the other. in my opinion it is stupid. i have seen one truck eat 3 motors at $450-600 each in one day. childish lame way of getting a quicker winch only to dnf with winch failure.
fast winches are better in hydralic, a mate hes his pulling 38m/min at full load, day in day out. that said no more q's about this certian winch.
resistance halves on 24v. i wouldn't bother as you can't charge 2 batteries effecively one is the limiting factor (like why you don't mix 3 good d's and one bad in a torch), and you cannot winch on 24 whilst simultaneously charging at 12 as it short circuits, so a 24v alt is the go. once again the more different you make your truck for a little advantage the more you loose when it lets go and you need parts in a hurry

Ive had 12v himount but due to voltage drop at high loads that was making the engine ECU shut down and GPS to drop out i set up an independant 24v system using a second 24v alternator. When i first done it i replaced the winch motor with a 24v Warn motor and it worked so much better than the 12v system i was rapt. At near full load the voltage was dropping to 24v (alt charges at around 28-30v) i did however stall the winch on a really hard pull (broke the 11mm plasma) and if you stall with a 24v winch it just melts the motor com. I needed to get the winch running quickly for my next trip so i refitted the 12v 2.5hp motor i had with 24v going into it and whow did it work well then. I made some enquiries with other comp guys and they said that motor life would be reduced but thats the price for performance. I fitted a new 12v 6HP Warn motor and small air comp to pump cooling air through it for the Vic Winch and it performance is excellent. The main thing i must always remember is to make sure not to stall. Stop the winch before and rerig the pull. I have also heard from a an Electrical Engineer that lower voltage motors have heavier windings to handle the higher amperages compared to a similar higher voltage motors.
