Is it one bang when you put it in gear, or a series of bangs as you drive along in reverse gear? Is it loud/rough enought that you actually feel it go bang, or just hear a sorta clunking noise?

Firstly, watever it is, I wouldn't drive it.... atleast not in reverse :D , i had a noise exactly how you describe it, only it was when I went forward, not reverse, turns out one of my gears was chewed out. So if your pretty good with a spanner, drop the gearbox maybe? If not, go to a mech, and bring a wad of cash cuz mine cost around 600 but that was with uni's and sum other stuff.

If you are asking if you can put a spare tranfer case in, instead of a gearbox, then 1stly, go find a brick wall, and bang your head against it for even thinking of something soo stoopid :P :D .... if you where asking can u just put the tranny gears and bearing in in-place of the busted gearbox ones, well, just see if they are the same size, which i would definately say they arent  . You could just run 2 tranny's i spose, but youd have a max speed of like 50k's..... would it give you super low range though? :?:
