Dana 60 Axles
I have just received my permanent residency visa so will be coming over to join all you 4 wheel drivers. I have got a quick question. I am not going to bring my current car with me due to loads of forseeable problems but I didn't know whether to bring my axles and diffs. I have a dana 60 front axle with arb locker and gm 14 bolt rear axle with detroit locker. Will I be able to build these into a project over there or should I stick to toyota / nissan stuff available. Your comments would be appreciated. See you in July!!
bring them with you. Parts for the front diff might be a bit hard to find, but hey the are better than toyota. As for the rear there should be a fair few spare for that getttin around.
Project = NICE
so were are you movin too??
p.s. as i was the first to reply can you please bring me a front diff cause i'm a top bloke pretty please

Thanks for the replies lads. From what some of you have said it seems that a dana 60 front axle would be worth bringing over. Could you let me know what sort of money you would expect to pay for a complete axle hub to hub and what do you do about spares. Do you import them from the states or are there breakers over there.
Also I am a bit confused What do you call the diff and the axle. Are they both the same? as in the UK the diff is the lumpy bit with the ring and pinion in it and the axle is the whole outer casing with all internal pieces and the drive shaft is called a half shaft. Confused? you soon will be!!!

when most people say "diffs" they mean the whole axle housing with all its innards, diff centre (or third member as the yanks like to call it) is the "lumpy bit in the middle" even though this really is the diff carrier and the centre is inside this. Drive shafts are also called tail shafts (even the front ones ) that connect to the pinion from the t case, inner axles are usually called axles. I can see how your getting confused

English (GB) Australian English
Halfshaft Axle or Axle Shaft
Diff Diff Centre
Axle Diff or Axle
Stub Axle Spindle (or Stub axle to LR people)
The shaft from the transfer case to the axle is called a Tail Shaft or a Propeller (Prop) Shaft
To answer your original question - definitely bring the front D60. The big nissan rear diff is probably almost as strong as a 14B (and smaller) - but has semi-floating axles (half shafts). The 14B would probably be a bit stronger than a landcruiser rear diff, but again the toyota diff is a lot smaller. You can get parts for both diffs here.

No they don't
The front is a D50 which is sort of 60 sized but with 44 size axles (they neck down at the diff) they also have unitised wheel bearings. Dynatrac are making plenty of money converting 250s to full 60 spec front ends.
The rear is a stirling 10.5" diff. this is unique to Fords. It has relatively few ratios available. It is very stong though.
